It's one thing to be cautious, it's another to be stupid cautious. It would have to be a stupid person to lay a bag, to do harm on a sidewalk, with no one around or any structural item around for it to do harm. The bag would have to be an atomic bomb to have destructive force enough to cause area destruction. It would have been a different story if it was laid against a pillar or something. It was stupid to assume anything else other than someone put it there temporary and especially if they saw you and what you were doing and it caught their attention to take action. That is called overreaction.

You are spot on in your evaluation of the threat. Your evaluation of the intelligence of the security guards is a bit harsh.

These two security guards issued equipment is made by Motorola not Glock.

Probably, several of my Rights may have been infringed but I was there to take pictures and they were there to earn a paycheck.

I am fairly certain there is a oil rich country's consulate within a few hundred yards of the bridge. I am not an explosive expert. I could have pointed out the bridge is more of a shield than a threat, but I am glad they were doing their job.

Rattlesnakes are important. Without them the rodent population would explode. Rattlesnakes are not aggressive and will only attack if cornered or surprised.

Yikes, have to agree with cosmo54, it's a sad sign of the times that we have to keep things like that in mind now and not leave packs even for a moment, even when we think we are safe from thieves. I wonder if I would have thought of that in the same situation... Glad it all turned out alright. Looks like you handled it quite well.

A couple of years back, my wife and I were travelling on a train France. We were the only couple in the carriage and there as a back pack in the overhead compartment. We were contemplating throwing it out of the window when a young man came rom another carriage to claim it. Just in time, because a few minutes later it would have been gone. DON'T leave your bags alone. No No not you honey:)

I find it hard to believe that all the hogs responding to date agree on this topic or any topic. Amazing. After reading posts for a few months, I sometimes doubt we can agree that sin and rattlesnakes are undesirable. This is not a bad thing; it is just another example of the freedom of expression we enjoy in our nation.

Rattlesnake venom is extracted and used in medical research. Besides, they keep the rodent population under control. It's the big Pythons that worry me- they have no natural predators in the U.S.

i work in New York City. Leaving a back pack will always get someone attention. Unattended bags have cause trains to delay leaving the station

Mercer, You're right. It seems to me it depends on the nature of the sin and the location of the rattlesnake, doesn't it?<g> ...... Coot

We have willfully given up our freedoms for all that many had died to establish over the centuries because of brainwashing by Homeland Security concerns. Of course freedom has risks. We have chosen no freedom to attain no risks. A suicidal terrorist need only pilot an auto into the wrong lane to achieve his goals. We live with this threat everyday, there is no way to eliminate all threats all the time. However, carrying a camera bag may mark you for terrorist profiling. I found that parking near a bridge and walking out to take a photo of the fall foliage over water profiled me as a terrorist threat. A state police officer escorted me away. I believe the freedoms we have lost for good to 'combat terrorists' to be a far bigger loss and and that is the real victory of the terrorists, not our safety but taking away our freedom.

Traveled to the Woodlands, Texas to experiment with DOF and composition. I set my camera backpack on sidewalk for a point of interest. There was a group of party boats behind me and across the water. I picked up my tripod and wandered north to set up for them. It was a Monday morning and there was no one else there. I figured the backpack would be safe.

The Woodlands security had a different take on my activities. Two guards, with radios, descended on my activities like bees on honey. After a look at my drivers license and pack content, all was well. I thanked them for there due diligence.
