Try "FastStone Image Viewer". In spite of the name, it is actually an editor. It has no trouble dealing with NEF files and displays them with better clarity and brightness than any other editor I've used. It's free, but I send them a contribution every year.
The interface is extremely intuitive and the program is lightning fast. The current version is 4.8, and the website is

I use FastStone for initial viewing and culling of my daily pictures, which seem to average about 200 count. If the pictures are pretty good I'll do all the processing and saving with FastStone. Some features are
- Compare up to 4 pictures at a time
- Non-destructive batch conversion of any supported file type to TIFF, JPG, or a host of other formats into another file folder.
- All the usual: color, brightness, exposure curves, straightning, cropping, sharpening, noise reduction, repairing, resizing, artistic (such as paint brush or sepia), uploading tool from memory chip, file organization, and the list goes on and on.
- Top rated by CNET and others.
- It's free
If some pictures in a day's shooting need advanced processing, I use Lightroom, but often FastStone is more than up to the job.
Besides my Nikons DSLRs, I just bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ-200. The pictures are extremely noisy, especially the RW2 (raw) files. Lightroom imports the RW2 files but doesn't process them well. After a lot of trial and error, what works very well is to convert the RW2 files to TIFF format in FastStone and then process them in FastStone, or a few in Lightroom as needed.
I intend to start two threads on this topic after a week or more of fiddling around with the Panasonic: 1) the FastStone Image Viewer, and 2) the Lumic DMC FZ-200 and other small sensor superzooms have a great issue with extremely noisy pictures.
I hope you give FastStone a try. If so, I'll be glad to assist if you need a hand in how to do certain functions. Just send me a Private Message.
