I have a Nikon D3100 and photoshop elements 8.

I have spent hours trying to open raw files, I have followed instructions, watched you tube, read a book and I still can't open them.

I don't think I can take anymore, my brain has gone to mush!

I need a complete idiots step by step guide on open raw files. Please help.

I have elements 11 so I am not sure if its different in 8 it once you load them in organizer they should automatically open, if you are trying to open I edit that should happen on its own after you double click. The only other is, if your program is not compatible with your camera. That again I don't know.

Thank you for that, unfortunately for Elements 8 you need a raw converter I think and therein lies my problem

Elements 8 is older than your camera and will likely require upgrading to process your RAW files.

The latest version of Adobe Camera Raw compatible with PSE 8, is 6.2.
Adobe included the D3100 camera for the first time in version 6.3.
See: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-99056-1.html

I guess it means that you will have to upgrade your version of PSE (but I'd wait a month or two, version 12 should be out towards the end of September), or get the DNG converter from Adobe.

Adobe has a knowlegdebase entry just about this situation.

According to Adobe, you need ACR 6.3 or later, or LightRoom 3.3 or later to be able to read the RAW files from a D3100.

Thanks Esther I will wait for V12.

I downloaded the DNG converter but that didn't work either.

RawTherapee is a free program that will open your NEF files and allow you to edit them much like Adobe Camera Raw. I use it on my IR D3100 RAW files. After editing you can save as .tif or .jpg.

Hope you find it useful.

I have Elements 8 and is an old program. Go to the Adobe web site listing all the cameras it supports in RAW. Mine was not one of them so I bought Elements 11. Hope this helps.

I've been using DNG converter (adobe) and really like the control over the raw picture. It's free. When just doing Jpeg I miss the control DNG gives.
