I concur that the best source of information on what to see can be found in Maui Revealed. It will tell you EVERYTHING, and then you can make the judgement calls. If you want to see the real Hawaii, head down the Hana Highway to Hana, and spend a few days over there in favor of the Hauli time-shares. Must and easy sess include Haleakala Park, Io State Park, Makawao (stayed there ... great!) and the Hana side. Do your research before you go, then review constantly! Get out and walk around and explore the back corners, and you will get some amazing shots.

We're flying to Maui (staying in Kehei) for 13 days (10 actual days on the island)...I'm taking my Canon 5DIII, lenses all Canon (17-40L, 24-105L, 100L macro, 100-400L), chargers/batteries/cards/clean underwear, blah blah blah.
My question is....anyone who's been there or lives there, are there any special spots/shots/views I should try to find outside the normal tourist realm? Also, ya think I should take my infrared converted Canon 50D?
Never been out of the states,.....thanks for any help.. :-)

Absolutely take your converted 50D. There are a lot of subjects there for it. We just got back from Maui I have been posting images on UHH approximately daily. They are on continuing threads so you will have to scroll through the pages to see them.

I'd recommend sunrise on Haleakala. You have to get up very early, but it's worth it. When I went (December), I wore all the clothes I brought with me, and I was still cold. As you drive up the road to the summit, you get an elevation sign every 1,000 feet.

Off the subject of photography - go to Warren & Annabelle's. Best magic/comedy show ever!! Google it - 4.8 stars out of 5.0.

I found sunset at the top of the crater to be just as awesome as sunrise if not better. Day to day weather will make one or the other the more spectacular.
Be sure to bring a WARM coat, hat & gloves. It can be cold up there.

I've done sunset on Mauna Kea a couple of times. Fantastic, but cold. The tour company hands out hooded parkas.

Seven pools is also quite stunning, I believe it is on the Road to Hana. We took the time to take a dip in one of the pools, it was lovely.

Honolua Bay is always beautiful and very picturesque, it is also a fun place to snorkel, lots to see there.

Molokini crater is a wonderful sight you can take a boat tour to or you can take a snorkel boat to and hope right in the water, so much fun!

I rented a jeep and headed to Hana. Then I went beyond Hana!
You can circle the island. Beyond Hana there are some wicked cliffs with no railings. I don't know if they still let you take rented vehicles there. I did it in 1984. Put yourself on the cliffs beyond Hana at sunrise and be prepared for a spectacular view.

As someone stated, drive the road to Hana. Leave early for the trip as you do not want to drive this road at night, which I did once (never again). There are many parks and waterfalls and for photographers it will be a slow trip. You will want to pull over every minute or so. Despite what the car rental companies tell you it possible to drive the complete loop, just take it slow past Hana going clockwise on the island.

Drivng on the local roads and circling the "thumb" of Maui is amazing for it's scenery also. It helps to have nerves of steel on some parts of the road however. Make the trip clockwise, so you are against the mountain, not the drop off. There are places where two cars can not fit side by side.

How about the sunrise on the top of Haleakala? Well you could get up in the dead of night and drive up a winding mountain road in freezing temperatures, just to be surprised by the hundreds of cars and people when you get there!

Yes, if you happen to be there when the sun climbs out of the clouds it's breathtaking.

My advice? Sleep in and catch the sunset atop Haleakala, fewer people, warmer, and you can see the colors in the crater (which is in shadow at sunrise).

Have a great trip, to me the Hawaiian Islands have some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Don't forget to let your eyes and mind soak it up and put the camera down once in awhile (if you can!).

A couple out-of-the way places...

From Kehei, go thru Lahaina and follow that main road around that side of the island. Like everywhere else on the island, you'll see some great scenery. Along the way, you can stop at "Dragon's Teeth" in Kapalua... odd rock formations along the surf. Continue west/north around the island until you hit the Nakalele Blowhole. Those provide different photo ops for the island. You can keep going that direction, but it gets to be an adventure.

If you take the road to Hana, make a stop at Ho'okipa Beach to get good angle shots of the surfers... also watch for the Rainbow Eucalyptus trees along the road.

I'd like to recommend Haleakala at dawn, but showed up 30 minutes too late when I tried. Was still well worth the drive.

Enjoy it!!

spending 5-10 thousand dollars to shoot a sunrise....is really not worth it..especially when you can see the same thing anywhere...a sunrise is a sunrise..PERIOD

Isn't there a town called Hell in that area?
