I like the super zoom feature as will as I can shoot RAW files.
The Nikon 'bridge" camera did not shoot RAW or I would have gotten that on...

Shown is a recent moon shot at 1200mm!

Wow this is an amazing shot! Does Nikon have a camera that is comparable to the SX 50 ?

I bought that camera before my last trip to India. I LOVE IT ! Here is a picture of the moon taken on June 24 zoomed 100X, a picture taken at night in Amritsar (India) on automatic and a portrait of a sadu (in Jaisalmer, India). So you see that it takes great pictures, close or far away, in full sunshine or at night. I think you will LOVE IT too ! I also have a Canon Rebel XTi and I don't use it any more... Have fun !

Thanks

Hello, Marilyng. I do not wish to hijack your thread but I have the SX50HS. Attached is a photo of the (not quite full) moon taken last month in early morning light .. straight out of the camera .. full zoom - full 4000 x 3000 size - no crop or PP - download for best view & EXIF data. I hope this example helps you to make your decision.

Yes, it is slightly cropped. With these cameras, sometimes, even on a sturdy tripod, there is slight "drift" so it can be tedious to shoot.

This image was off center, so I did some creative cropping.

When I go looking for birds and other wildlife to shoot I usually go with two good Canon bodies and two of the following lenses:

* Canon 400mm F2.8 IS with 2X expander.

* Canon 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 IS.

* Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS.

Nevertheless, sometimes I also borrow my wife's SX50 IS because its reach, 1200mm, is so great, that even animals too far away for my longest telephoto lens can be well framed. It is also capable of mounting a speedlite flash unit for bounce flas indoor shots. For all sorts of other photo task it does between fairly well to very well. I consider it a great camera.

Yes! You'd spend THOUSANDS of $$ on a 800-1000mm telephoto lens the size of an NFL linebacker's thigh!

I got my SX50 at Amazon for <$400!

Yes, this is what I am thinking. Why do we all spend so much money on cameras & lenses if this camera is so good everyone should be shooting with it ? Best Buy has it now for $329.00 with a free camera bag!

Marilyng, you've probably already discovered this, but with a plethora of superzoom cameras hitting the marketplace in the last couple of years, it seems as if the one camera that has always been the benchmark for comparison's sake has been the Canon SX40 (which I own) and now the SX50. And even when these 2 cameras are compared, the SX50 seems to get higher marks than its older brother. Get it...you won't regret it. Here are some shots I've taken at or near Fort DeSoto in Florida and none of them have been altered in any way. I'm not the best photographer but I like the way these photos turned out using my SX40.

Full zoom, gives a macro effect with bokeh

Regardless of model, I think it is always nice to have a back-up camera. I always have a least two cameras on me (sometimes more) with different lenses attached.
