Shot these today, without an added external IR filter, was in shadow so I just flipped the Sony(DSC F717) into night vision to see what the result would be. I have the infra red emitters covered over with a couple of layers of black vinyl tape. It seems if the camera is in enough shade or indoors I don't have to bother with an IR filter.

Geoff,

Looks like classic IR to me. What difference do the IR emitters make? I thought most cameras just used them as a focusing aid. Maybe a few A-B comparisons with IR emitters covered and uncovered with the same subject/conditions are in order so we can see the difference.

Keep 'em coming,

Eric

Colin,
Thanks for the compliment. I was lucky that day that we had a storm moving in and the clouds were quite nice for this sort of photography.

The camera I used was a Sony DSC-F-707 in Night Shot Mode. In Night Shot and Night Framing mode, the camera has IR emitting diodes to illuminate the scene and is sensitive to IR light.

For use in daytime, I made a soft "washer" to fit near the lens opening, and between the IR emitting diodes and the inside surface of the IR filter. This kept the IR emitting diodes from illuminating the inside of the IR filter I placed in front of the lens. Without the "washer" the diodes produced nothing but flare as they reflected off the inside of the IR filter. The filter is a Hoya Infrared [RM90].

I have used this filter on my Nikon D700 with reasonable results, but nothing more than test shots as of present.

Off again to try several filters with the NX10 @ Alberta Information Center Close to the B.C. Border

The first with the NX10 665nm - where in the heck did all that YELLOW come from???

The second from the B+W 403 BUT had a Hot Mirror Filter on the Lens & WB taken from the 403 - the "YELLOWS" befuddle me

The third from a Kolarivision 720nm Filter - MORE Normal - or is that just me  :D :-D

Colin,

That is part of the uncertainty when shooting IR. I get a kind of 'acid green'/ with my Super Blue during processing. It is almost, but not quite a 'Goldie Filter' effect. Just keep processing until you get the colors the way you want them.

Hi Eric, the IR emitters are not necessary for day time shooting and as Bob said they cause flare when an external filter is used, but they are necessary if you're are shooting in total darkness, no light no image. These emitters that are blocked only work in night shooting, there are others for focusing.

Colin,

Below are three copies of the same image taken with the Super Blue 47B. the first is straight out of camera with WB set on blue sky (I think).

The second is with the color cast being set on white clouds. I put my cursor on white clouds I could find and clicked it to correct for color cast. Sometimes I like clicking on black or gray vs white, the difference is subtle but noticeable.

The last one is converting the second image to B&W using the Newspaper preset in PSE 9.

Don't know where all the yellow comes from but it makes for 'acid green' foliage.

Here is a second set of photos with the color cast set on black shadows and using the IR Effect B&W preset.

The important thing is I have a lot of fun traveling to take IR photos, processing them and then sharing them here on UH.

1. first three out of the camera
2. second three after channel Mixing
3. last three after post processing
