Yet another vote here for PhotoScape. It's free, effective, easy to use and packed with extra features and abilities. Its photo viewer is excellent, as are its ability to produce multi-photo images and to split a photo into a number of parts, making the production of some very large photos easy. I have, and use, some more technically oriented programs, but often return to PhotoScape when ease is important.

There is a free version of picnik that I've been enjoying....also an option of upgrade to the premium version. I'm a complete novice, but so far for what I've needed/wanted to do, picnik has been fun!

Hi,
can any one suggest me a good free photo editing tool to edit JPG / NEF file that are taken in my Nikon D 90?

I could not understand ViewNK that is given by Nikon.

I use a freeware named....
IRFANVIEW and have installed all of it's plugins. I believe that you will find this to be a very powerfull and easy to use software.

Could I suggest that you place a photo that you'd like to alter on this site, with some instruction as to the alterations you'd like to make. Some of us would be willing to show what are suggested software items can do.

Snapseed. It doesn't have all that some software programs have but it does allow you to do a surprising amount editing.

I second the motion for FastStone! It's a terrific viewer, and provides some good basic touch up tools. I have Picasa as well, and PaintShopPro x3, but always use FastStone first before going to PSPx3....

I am using Picasa for most work. Some arguments it is not a true editing program. Maybe, but it but works. They just released the newest 3.9 ver. which has some fun options added.
There is a link to Picnik from the newest ver., it says you need the latest version of flash to operate it. Have not yet tried it. Like Picasa for organizing photos. Has some neat options for uploads with the Google+.

Paint Shop Pro Version 6 is very easy to use. An older version before they got big. Someone that has upgraded may have their old copy and you could get it free or very cheap. Try ebay too.

Picasa is free and runs on either Mac or PC. It includes a link to Picnik if you want to use it. I have written a Picasa book whose table of contents you can see at motorhomememories.com.

I have used Picasa for years. it's by far the best freeby you can find. It does almost anything a begginer can want.

It may be that each program has its strengths and weaknesses.

I like Faststone because when working on an image, it is the image that seems to take precedence. At first glance of a full screen photo the tool bars are hidden off frame, and then can be called up by moving the cursor to the edge of the screen. So one is always working on a full screen image. Also, an image can both be previewed and or immediately returned to its original state before and after editing. The basic editing process provided by Faststone compared to Picasa and others seems less cluttered and more connected to enhancing the photo to me.
After using for awhile I was even inspired to give a donation.

Be careful with Gimp. I downloaded it and it came with a virus. Took the Geeksquad (thank goodness I was still in their program!!) over 4 hours to clean up my computer. I use Picasa and Picnik. I would like to download some of the ones suggested on this site.... however I am a bit nervous to do so at this time. :)
