Is elements 11 a stand alone program or is it an add on for photoshop? Does it run in windows XP? I have lightroom, but I cannot load it on my computer because it needs Vista or newer to run, and I didn't know that before I bought it.
Elements 11 is not a plugin and it runs just fine on Windows XP. You can probably sell your copy of Lighroom if you run it in the classified here on UHH....or just keep it until you upgrade to a new computer.
Hi. I think the rest of the guys have given you some excellent advice. Personally I like PSE 10/11. Yes. I know it is quite a handful for a beginner but get yourself a good handbook from Amazon, take your time and work through it - selecting just what you want to do in the early stages. When you are more confident you have an excellent editing programme to draw on. Incidentally. Not being a Lightroom user, I am not sure if you can email pix using THIS editing programme. I may be wide of the mark and I will stand corrected. PSE/Serif/Picasa ALL have this facility which is SO necessary if you want to share your work. Happy shooting with your new Nikon. Cheers. I Have been teaching PSE since version 2. Version 11 has an easier to see OPTIONS BAR, much easier for older eyes than earlier versions, and unlike PS CS versions. I have v9,10,11 and CS5.1 all on my laptop. For photos there is little I can do in CS that can't be done in PSE.
The large selections of online tips and tricks as well as printed books make this a great choice.
My one word of advice is to skip straight to the EXPERT mode.
Again,Thank you all for your advice. I'm going to"jump in" and use Photoshop Elements. Philphotog, I'd love to see Scotland and take some beautiful pictures. Thanks again, Mark
Picasa is a free download and very popular here and does not have a huge learning curve. GIMP is also free but I've never used it so can't speak to the learning curve. As mentioned Lightroom 4 and PSE 11 are both very good and relatively inexpensive but require some time to learn. My suggestion would be to start with Picasa.
GIMP is comparable to PS and expandable with about 1000 plug-ins (no joke). It has a steep learning curve which can be converted to a gentle curve if you have access to PareandFocus.com.
Hi. Delighted you have made your choice. Sure you'll love every moment. Just take it easy...baby stepsd and you'll soon be an expert. Glad you picked Nikon - I was a Canon Man before conversion and I haven't look back. America's vast but you can't beat Perthshire's Big Tree Country. Maybe some day! Philphotog
Forget lightroom too convoluted go for Elements 11 great beginners program
I agree. And buy at least two books that appeal to your style of learning to learn how take advantage of its features. Makes sure that at least one of them describes a "work flow". I start off with the same five or six procedures and then let the image evolve. And don't forget to "play". Ask yourself over and over again, "what would happen if I ...". And keep notes <grin>".

Q&A: Q: can you tell us where this "content aware" / resynthisiser feature is hiding in GIMP? Not being 'negative' but can you or your 11 year old tutor tell us if it actually is in GIMP or has to be downloaded seperately from yet another site and then installed? A: Yes, this is a free plugin for GIMP. It is updated regularly. The resynthesize plugin for Gimp 2.8.2 has not yet been announced. We are all waiting and hope to see it soon. The previous version was 2.6 which works in 2.8 after a fashion (not good). I'll keep the forum posted when the update becomes available. In the mean time, try the heal tool or the Clone tool. Manual operation but excellent tools.

There you have it free and a great tutorial by one of UHHs own members. I use GIMP along with Picasa, Smart Photo Editor, and PicMonkey. Smart Photo is like $25, PicMonkey is $5 a month so if you're not planing to use it you don't have to pay or you can purchase for $30 a year, the rest are free. So for $40 a year I have all I need and all but GIMP are very easy to learn. As a beginner I think you would like Smart Photo Editor and Picasa because their ease of use.......
WOW! The information that comes off this site continues to amaze me. There is enough info on this one discussion to keep someone studying for a good month. I'll bet if you took a college course you wouldn't get any more info, and probably not as much, as is listed here and most of it is free. Amazing.
I need your help an opinions. I am new to digital photography. I recently purchased a Nikon D5200. I would like to post edit my pictures using software. Please give me your opinions on what would be fairly easy to use and to grow into. The programs I know that are being used are: Nikon Capture, Photoshop Elements, Serif. I would like to be able to edit RAW photos when I get more experience. Help!
Mark: Great choice. Make sure you know the dslr terminology first. Will make it easier for E11. The UK has some great monthly magazines with tutorials and most use Elements for their lesson. Worth a look.
