I read a thread that looks interesting and instead of good posts I read a bunch of crap. And I have to read a lot of it before I post a response. I respect those whose posts further the conversation and I reject the fools who do the opposite. Deal with it.

Perhaps you should make it clear what you are referring to when you post yourself, after all of 9 posts

Use "quote reply" instead of just "reply" so everyone knows what the hell you are replying to. Go finish your cornflakes.

100% as I have broad shoulders

Thank you for pointing that out. And actually I did have corn flakes today.

Are you in hiding for a reason :)

Hey smile

A portfolio is not like the old days. An on-line presence is a must whether your own web site or a photo hosting site.

Your on-line presence is your portfolio. Bottom line, you got to have work to sell, then you have to promote it. In today's world, that is online through website, social networks, and stock photo sites.

But in the end, you will most likely make your living selling workshops, if you choose not to get into wedding and event photography.

What the op has not realized and it is something anyone with more than 1/2 a brain should realize, especially if he or she has an interest in photography is:

Everyone now has a digital camera.

So selling photos is like selling ice at the south pole.

I propose using this thread to talk about V8s:

A portfolio is not like the old days. An on-line presence is a must whether your own web site or a photo hosting site. You have to be able to post your work so you can direct others to it. Decide if you want to specialize in let's say portraits or weddings or maybe commercial photography.
Of course you can do it all but I found it better to specialize. Word of mouth is a good form of advertising and is cheap. If people are praising your work and telling others it better than a yellow page ad. Have professional looking business cards printed and hand them out like candy on Halloween. Show your work in local competitions or at an art guild. There are all kind of ways of self promotion. Ok, that's a little more positive and constructive. Maybe some of you will quit your bitchin' now.

Yes, business cards, a web presence...a LOT of networking. You can't be shy about your work. There are a lot of Meet Up Groups that are photography based that are great places to get plugged in.

anyone with more than 1/2 a brain should realize

is/was it necessary

You are correct I agree with you 100% but this is rather rude also

The comments I respond to already went off the rails. I guess you don't grasp that. You should be more concerned with people who create the problem and not those who call them on it.

This group is obviously made up of a bunch of people who have more free time on their hands then I do. I had a simple question and it seems I have opened a hornets nest of sophomoric stand up comics. I'm out of here.

No problem. Just here to help. And cause trouble every now and then. I hope you will scroll back and look at one of my earlier post where I did offer some constructive advice. BTW welcome to UHH. Hang around long enough and you'll get a better feel for how the regulars act. Some good advice from some really knowledgeable people is here as well as a few smart asses. Like myself. If you're overly sensitive and don't have a really good sense of humor stay out of the "General Chit-Chat area. It can be a dangerous place.

It's the same answer that you'd give the person who asked how do you make a living at acting or advertising or dancing, or playing an instrument or ANY profession the relies on talent. Do research and you'll find a million ways that people have used, understand that none will work the same way twice.

You have several strikes against you.
1) You have a lot of competition.
2) You think there is an easy answer.

sophomoric

WOW! I had to look that up

Sophomoric humor refers to juvenile, puerile, and base comedy that would normally be expected from an adolescent

Actually, I had the misfortune of reading some really nasty posts earlier today and I think this was a remnant of that! I have a pretty good sense of humor...except maybe for the past 30 minutes!

ha ha. .. your all upset because no one supplied the magic answer on how to make money as a photographer. Here it is, there is no magic answer. Every day every talented photographers fail at business. photographers that's talents would blow your mind, yet they don't have whatever was missing. every day photographers that should have their camera stripped from their hands and beaten with tripods are opening "businesses" and turning out crap that should never have been seen by the public and people are flocking to them. you want to know why? cause they are cheap, so cheap that if they actually looked at their COGs they would see they are actually giving away their product.

Making money with any hobby you love is hard, when you add in the fact that every Tom, Dick and Henry thinks because they got a DSLR for Christmas they can start charging people for money, running a photography business is not a quick and easy way to money. everyday i field calls from people wanting a deal because "well x,y,z only charges $50 and I get all the pictures on a disk, but your pictures are so much better. i really want to have you do our pictures, can you match their price?"

Nope, for $50 I won't even put my CF card in the camera. clients want basement barn prices but boutique images. this is the hard truth about photography in today's world, thanks craigslist photographers.
