Hi, I read many photo magazines and visit many photo web sites also. They all give me good advice about how to make better photos and show me how to use new techniques on the computer. However none have shown me how to make a living as a photographer. I'm not interested in wedding photos, that's the obvious, I'm looking for companies that buy photos. Who is paying for photo projects. Anyone have a unique idea on how to make a buck at doing what we love to do?

The easiest way to make a million as a photographer is to start with two million!

Heard that one. So we want to tell jokes, cool. What's the difference between kinky and perverted? Kinky you use a feather, perverted you use the whole chicken. Now can we get back to the topic? How do we make money as photographers?

What the person was trying to illustrate is that it's VERY HARD to make any kind of a living off of things like this....it's damn near impossible unless you want to starve.

It's like actors....1% make a living...the rest wish they did.

Do you know the difference between a large pizza and a professional photographer?

A large pizza can feed a family of four.

You are asking us how to make money as a photographer. My first suggestion is you go to a library or good book store and you will most likely find serveral books and or magazine articles that discuss this very issue. My second suggestion is you tell us something about your experience. My final suggestion is to lighten up. If you are this uptight over what has been said so far I wonder what your experience will be dealing with customers who will be very demanding and critical of your work.

First and formost... actually know how to use your camera (not saying you don't but you would be amazed how many post asking how to make money as a photographer that just purchased their first "real" camera" ).

Second.. start with small assignments (read FREE or nearly FREE sessions) with small mom and pop type businesses, you need to make a name for yourself.

Commerical photography is a hard section of photography to break into. Corporations are known for using the same selected, trusted photographers over and over again. Breaking into the inner circle is nearly impossible.

Don't quit your regular job.
See if you can find a photographic niche to fill, and wedding photography would not be it.
Knowing how to run a business is a major part of having a successful business. Just because you can take nice pictures, that doesn't mean you will have a successful business.

This is a very popular question here, and one of the best answers was given this past July by marcomarks. Follow the link and move down the page a bit.

Besides being adept at photography, you also need to be a shrewd businessman & a proficient marketer...
