Use "quote reply" instead of just "reply" so everyone knows what the hell you are replying to. Go finish your cornflakes.

Thank you for pointing that out. And actually I did have corn flakes today.

No problem. Just here to help. And cause trouble every now and then. I hope you will scroll back and look at one of my earlier post where I did offer some constructive advice. BTW welcome to UHH. Hang around long enough and you'll get a better feel for how the regulars act. Some good advice from some really knowledgeable people is here as well as a few smart asses. Like myself. If you're overly sensitive and don't have a really good sense of humor stay out of the "General Chit-Chat area. It can be a dangerous place.

Actually, I had the misfortune of reading some really nasty posts earlier today and I think this was a remnant of that! I have a pretty good sense of humor...except maybe for the past 30 minutes!

"except maybe for the past 30 minutes! "

Now that's funny!

ha ha. .. your all upset because no one supplied the magic answer on how to make money as a photographer. Here it is, there is no magic answer. Every day very talented photographers fail at business. photographers that's talents would blow your mind, yet they don't have whatever was missing. every day photographers that should have their camera stripped from their hands and beaten with tripods are opening "businesses" and turning out crap that should never have been seen by the public and people are flocking to them. you want to know why? cause they are cheap, so cheap that if they actually looked at their COGs they would see they are actually giving away their product.

Making money with any hobby you love is hard, when you add in the fact that every Tom, Dick and Henry thinks because they got a DSLR for Christmas they can start charging people for money, running a photography business is not a quick and easy way to money. everyday i field calls from people wanting a deal because "well x,y,z only charges $50 and I get all the pictures on a disk, but your pictures are so much better. i really want to have you do our pictures, can you match their price?"

Nope, for $50 I won't even put my CF card in the camera. clients want basement barn prices but boutique images. this is the hard truth about photography in today's world, thanks craigslist photographers.

You can't read can you? I laid out ways to make money. I also said how hard it is. Don't post something and then tell someone you "know" why someone is upset. I don't like people who are rude...period. I don't like those who think they know what others "think". And I have zero respect for someone hasn't kept up with the thread yet makes posts like your last one. Catch up before making another comment. Your presumptuousness is mind numbing.

Hi, I read many photo magazines and visit many photo web sites also. They all give me good advice about how to make better photos and show me how to use new techniques on the computer. However none have shown me how to make a living as a photographer. I'm not interested in wedding photos, that's the obvious, I'm looking for companies that buy photos. Who is paying for photo projects. Anyone have a unique idea on how to make a buck at doing what we love to do?

There are always two parts of any successful profession.

1) The skills necessary to deliver the goods to the client. These can be hired or learned . . . only takes about 5 years of concentrated study)

2) The business end of business. This is the part most newcomers neglect, but is where the horse meets the cart. Without business knowlege you are guaranteed failure!

Just my three cents worth . . . oops . . . have to round that up to a nickle as Canada stopped producing pennies.

Your "comment" had nothing. It didn't address anything, answer anything. You're a "last word" person. Okay post one more silly comment. I'll give it the attention it deserves. None.

RUDENESS....... There's a subject.

We all love admire and respect our
troops that have been sent to
the "Stan" .

You had better love admire
and respect our troops or
I will get seriously rude.

Anyway some of those
men and women were/are
drill Sergeants/Sargents for US military.

Telling someone
I will rip your arms off and stuff them
in your ears and ride you around here
like a pogo stick is exactly what a
drill Sergeant would/has said... That's rude.

My point is; there is a time and a place
when rudeness is appropriate.

PS the worst and most hideous
comments I have ever heard came
from a female drill Sergeant drilling
WRAACs

You Canadian's are smart. I read an article somewhere that it takes 11 cents to mint and distribute a U.S. penny. No wonder we're broke. And before the crap starts flying I haven't done all the research on that. I will later if I think about it. Better yet someone else research it and tell me I'm wrong so I don't waste my time.

Think you have it bad. One of my patients happens be a recently retired city worker and photography enthusiast. Hoping to suplement his city pension with a little extra cash, he showed his photo portfolio to the editors of a certain magazine and asked what they thought. The exact answer was "If you want to make money with your camera, trying bashing an old lady over the head with it and taking her purse".

I read that it definitely costs more than 1 penny to make one penny. I don't know if it's 11 cents but we do lose money on them. In fact, years ago there was a half penny and it stopped being minted because it had such little buying power. But the buying power of the half penny when it was discontinued was equivalent to the buying power of a quarter today.

To follow that thinking why not quit printing one dollar bills? Six of them will get a cup of coffee at Starbucks and you might get a few pennies back. But that's been discussed on another thread. Some people think walking around with a Starbucks cup is a status symbol. More like a stupidity symbol is you ask me.

I agree with all of you. I used to make a decent living as a film shooter, until I was having trouble getting jobs when digital photography became prominent. I went back to school to become an urban planner. That's my day job now. However, when the job comes I will do it for the extra cash not for profit. Some folks are pretty lucky and persistent. Maybe. He won't have to sell his camera after all if he is lucky enoug. Good luck.

Go online and look for a site about how to sell to stock photography sites,

Agree it is tough times for freelance photography. Everyone with an iPhone is a photographer. Marketing is the hard part. Clearly, fancy web sites sell few photos. Stock work is painful ($.25 - 1.00 per shot) and it only works with outstanding work and very high volume. Shoot for fun and enjoy every opportunity. When one sells - rejoice.
