The wood of live oak is very tough and springy. I tried to use an axe one time thinking I could dig out a smaller stump. I know how to wield an axe and I failed miserably. The ship “Old Ironsides” was made from live oak and cannonballs bounced off.

Yes, one of the strongest woods. I grew up in a house built in 1774 of hand hewn oak beams.

Spectacular old live oak Gary. Reminds me of southern Louisiana. I had two on the property I owned there but not that large.

Love these huge live oaks! It is amazing how the branches grow outward more than upward. The longer they grow, them more leverage they place on the point where they diverge from growing upward, yet not snapping off and falling until either dying or getting nailed by a windstorm. Great shot, thanks for posting!

Interesting tree--Live Oaks look nothing like our oaks up here in the Midwest.

There are about 19 varieties of oak. Nice pictures though. Our nextdoor neighbor has a very large oak that drops all its acorns into our courtyard. They cut off the branches that affect their side...Grrr!

Beautiful, but certainly no similarity to the oaks I'm used to. I would have never guessed that this was an oak

There are many types, this is called a live oak( as opposed to a dead one?)
