I'm from NY and the oaks in the northeast don't look anything like these either. It's amazing how the huge branches grow out horizontally.

This one is large, but there are larger, and older live oaks in the southern South. This one is a beautiful example.

I find these trees to be utterly fascinating. When I worked hurricane clean up in southern Louisiana, we were cutting up a lot of them that had been downed. Oh how I wanted to bring the wood home with me!

Yes, it's a sad loss when something alive so long is destroyed.
