Live Oaks are different breed. They stay leafed out year round; thus the name. Because of their sprawling nature they are always a child’s favorite for climbing. That, by the way, can make for some great children pictures.

All over Galveston Island you can see many LARGE and interesting wood carvings. You find them around town on city property and in people’s front yards. These are a true case of heartbreak turning into beauty and whimsy. During a particularly devastating hurricane the island lost almost all ( perhaps all) of their beautiful live oaks. Many were quite old and after their demise all that was left were the stumps and trunks. In many cases rather than the difficult removal of those these carvings were created. Very creative choices were made and if you ever visit it is worthwhile to seek them out.

Love these huge live oaks! It is amazing how the branches grow outward more than upward. The longer they grow, them more leverage they place on the point where they diverge from growing upward, yet not snapping off and falling until either dying or getting nailed by a windstorm. Great shot, thanks for posting!

Yes, but it will happen eventually! Unless someone starts propping up the longer ones down by the ends. But it has a way to go if they can live to be 400 years.

Oaks are a very interesting family of trees. In the Midwest oaks such as shingle oak retain their (dead) leaves most of the winter. People smarter than I claim they are still in the process of adapting to shorter growing seasons and longer winters compared to the seasons they originally developed under.

Varieties of the red oak family are easy to identify the leaves have sharp points; even the rounded leaf of the shingle oak has a single point on the end of the leaf. Most flooring and cabinets are red oak. The white oak family has rounded ends on the leaves and the wood has a glue like substance inside the wood pores which makes the wood water tight. All wine-whiskey barrels are made of white oak.

Red oaks produce acorns every other year and white oaks every year. In addition to the many varieties of oaks are naturally occurring hybrids that can be really tough to identify.

Great shot of a magnificent live oak nicely decorated with Spanish Moss. I see you needed a wide angle lens to get most of it in the shot. My parents lived on Jekyll Island, GA and they had their fair share of live oaks. Some as impressive as this one, in fact the limbs of some actually rested on the ground. Seems to me there was a live oak organization which collected acorns to preserve the genes of the really big and old ones. Had to be a certain age, size and have lost no major limbs, either naturally or surgically.
