My dislike for Apple got yet another boost this week. Went to Alaska two months ago; my first time there. My old friend came along. We share expenses and driving; I do most of the photography and videography; she navigates and uses an iphone for additional images and short videos. First challenge when we got back...retrieve the files off the iphone for viewing on a Windows laptop; it took a while but we got that done. The latest snag...image files are not JPGs, they are HEICs. Typically I will get a stack of 4 x 6 prints for both of us for basic viewing; those prints are done by Walgreens. I am not sure Walgreens can print from HEIC files??? More CRAP from Apple!!!

Apple's favorite photo and video formats have a lower file size due to a higher efficiency codec. If you pay a dollar to the Microsoft Store you can have it for your computer. I did and it works. For me, it is the video part that is most important.

iPhones can be set to take JPEG stills and shoot more universal video files.

This may help.

You can upload JPG, HEIC (aka HEIF), and PNG formats—but no TIFFs. Still, that’s better than some competitors that only allow JPGs.

Maybe next time you should do more research before going online and trashing a company. As it turns out Walgreens will prints HEICs, and iPhones will shoot JPEG, so you really had no complaint against Apple at all.

UHH is the place to vent, while others deal with finding a correct answer.

And how is that Apple's fault?

It is a simple setting on the iPhone to switch between HEIC and jpg. My wife and I both have iPhones and I have hers set to HEIC because she takes a lot more photos than I do and HEIC is a newer, more efficient format for storage. HEIC is also used in GoPro cameras which I also use.

For editing, I download the HEICs and have a free software app that converts them to jpg. However, as someone mentioned WIN10 can be upgraded to view HEICs. If you are going to edit the iPhone images, just think of the HEIC format as raw, which may need conversion for your editor.

While jpg is still widely used, HEIC is finding more use in a wider range of cameras.

I see no crap in this post except a user who cannot use the equipment and output.
If you want JPEG set to produce JPEG.
Ps, many new mirrorless cameras will shoot HEIC type files if set to that.
Learn and choose what you are comfortable with.

Well, I learned something. I was always downloading and then opening the iPhone photo then exporting as jpeg. It took a long time, but I did it. Now I know there is an app and I will be going in and switching to take photos in jpeg.
Thanks!!

You lose a lot of capability if you shoot JPEG instead of HEIC. The easy thing to do is shoot HEIC and set you iPhone to automatically convert to JPEG when you transfer the photos.
