Just a lot of extra work for me personally.

Why is it work? The energy people spend flipping out over stuff like this should be redirected toward a solution (starting with research into HEIC on Windows or JPEG on iPhones).

Google is your friend.

Why is it work? Because last year's images from that exact iPhone on another weeklong road trip were JPEGs, I just checked a few. Knowing the owner of the iPhone as I do, she is not one to make changes like going from JPEG to HEIC; both of us are technologically challenged. I personally have the cell phone I do because it is what my granddaughter, her mother and her aunt have so I get free tech support, and it is definitely NOT an Apple product. My friend has that iPhone because it is what her daughter insisted she have. If you want to kneel at the altar of Apple that is your choice; I choose to avoid anything Apple. Eventually I will go through the hundreds of her iPhone images, select the best of the best, then deal with converting for editing as needed.

HEIC are better quality Jpegs. You can convert them to Jpg or tiff because Walgreens being the top quality print location can’t handle them.

Walgreens will accept HEIC. They won’t accept TIFF.

That is a sensible explanation to me. But, wow did you stir up a hornet's net from the Apple Fans. We all have choices and opinions.

It’s fine to have opinions but to rail at Apple, or any company, because of his own shortcomings.

My dislike for Apple got yet another boost this week. Went to Alaska two months ago; my first time there. My old friend came along. We share expenses and driving; I do most of the photography and videography; she navigates and uses an iphone for additional images and short videos. First challenge when we got back...retrieve the files off the iphone for viewing on a Windows laptop; it took a while but we got that done. The latest snag...image files are not JPGs, they are HEICs. Typically I will get a stack of 4 x 6 prints for both of us for basic viewing; those prints are done by Walgreens. I am not sure Walgreens can print from HEIC files??? More CRAP from Apple!!!

Wah Wah Wah. This is a simple issue to solve as noted in other replies. I'm happy that you don't like Apple…I don't happen to like Android or Microsoft but I keep that to myself and actually recommend both of them depending on what a questioner's needs, wants, and familiarity are. Apple has been proudly going out of business since 1984.

Apple has a lot of issues…even their users will mostly admit that…but the truth of the matter is that their stuff just works better for those users than some other brand. As others have noted…google is your friend and google knows everything…but some people just can't be bothered to see if there is a real problem because it's better in their mind to blame Apple. Somehow…if Apple made crap I don't think they would have achieved the largest market cap at over $3 trillion.

What a whiner.

If you replace the word vent with the word whine…you'll be right on target:-)

To say we have no complaint against Apple is not accurate. However, I am not including their video or photo format in that assessment.

Spoken from a long-time user of iPhone products.

Absolutely…they make a lot of what many people believe are mistakes and are a little too focused on not letting the user modify anything beyond specific Apple approved options…but that's pretty small potatoes compared to the fact that for the most part their stuff just works better more of the time than the other kinds of software an hardware…and for the better overall security, walled garden, fewer vectors to attack, and fewer virus/malware/trojanware/whateverware things to worry about.

I had that problem with some images a friend wanted me to do some post processing on. I googled, software to convert heic to jpeg, downloaded it, and was able to work on the resulting jpegs.

iPhones can be set to take JPEG stills and shoot more universal video files.

Setting the iPhone to “most compatible” yields JPEGs.

I use ‘gimp’, which can accept “HEIC” as inputs and can deliver JPEGs as outputs.
