HEIC - High Efficiency Image Container - it’s what allows things like Live Photo and portrait mode by containing more than one frame. The individual frames can be any of multiike formats, even JPEG, although it’s commonly HEIF which I believe the iPhone uses. HEIF saves about 20% of space over JPEG, allowing about 25% more images.

This is not a shortcoming of Apple’s iPhone, nor are Apple products, and in this case, the iPhone, junk. The iPhone just offers a number of different choices, among which is JPEG. The beauty of this is that you can choose whatever mode to suit your needs.

JPEG is a wonderful old codec that was designed to get images on the nascent internet by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. The fact that it is still around speaks to the fantastic job they did.
Heic is NOT an Apple proprietary format, it is a new standard with considerable benefits, Better quality, smaller file size ant the ability to preserve full color -it can preserve 16 bits of color information.
Every apple device can convert HEIC to JPEGs, and You can even tell your device camera to capture JPEGS
(that would be dumb because you are throwing away the ability to have 16 bits of color info)
Apple is certainly not perfect, but this is the flat out wrong issue to hate on Apple
Especially since every modern windows device can also run a conversion app. It should be a free utility to use newer better still and video codecs
Try it, you might like it......

The OP didn't bother to ask Walgreens if they can print HEICs, and someone replied that they did, so converting to JPEG was never necessary.

It is so very obvious that the people who design the product don't use it

A really ignorant observation. That is definitely not the case with Apple.

When Apple developed the HEIC/HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) I was initially surprised because it came with little fanfare (at least to my reading). I quickly learned that it's actually an improvement over JPEG. It takes less space, and image quality is somewhat bettered.

Since I post a lot of photos on forums I belong to, I often have to convert them to JPEG. Not only are there free conversion programs for this task, but Apple has even added a "Quick Action" into macOS:

Click on an HEIC image in the Finder. Right-click and scroll down to Quick Actions> and select. Choose Convert Image in the ensuing pop-up menu and you will be given some choices. Pick your options and instantly, you have both the original and a converted image in the same folder. Couldn't be easier!

Maybe next time you should do more research before going online and trashing a company. As it turns out Walgreens will prints HEICs, and iPhones will shoot JPEG, so you really had no complaint against Apple at all.

To say we have no complaint against Apple is not accurate. However, I am not including their video or photo format in that assessment.

Spoken from a long-time user of iPhone products.

Who is "we"? I was replying to the OP, which is why I used Quote Reply. The OP had no legitimate complaint against Apple in his post, and certainly no justification for calling them Crapple.

I dunno....I occasionally take photos with my iPhone 14 Pro in RAW they are formatted on my phone as DNG.. Yes...if it's not done in RAW it's HEIC on my phone. I send them to my MacBook Pro with Lightroom and....lo and behold....the HEIC files are in JPEG.

So...the problem is???

There is absolutely nothing here to indicate that.

My dislike for Apple got yet another boost this week. Went to Alaska two months ago; my first time there. My old friend came along. We share expenses and driving; I do most of the photography and videography; she navigates and uses an iphone for additional images and short videos. First challenge when we got back...retrieve the files off the iphone for viewing on a Windows laptop; it took a while but we got that done. The latest snag...image files are not JPGs, they are HEICs. Typically I will get a stack of 4 x 6 prints for both of us for basic viewing; those prints are done by Walgreens. I am not sure Walgreens can print from HEIC files??? More CRAP from Apple!!!

HEIC are better quality Jpegs. You can convert them to Jpg or tiff because Walgreens being the top quality print location can’t handle them.

Apple didn’t develop HEIF or HEIC. They were early adopters. Samsung also offers HEIF as a format.

There was no actual “observation” involved. Just knee jerk reaction.
