Looking at another post, and it got me thinking…

When I get a new camera body, accessory list is:

Spare battery
Plastic case for battery
Appropriate cards (2 or 4, depending on number of slots)
Strap
Shoulder pad for strap
L bracket

When I get a new lens:

Case
Clear filter

When I get a new tripod:

Manfrotto 130 adapter

When I get a new tripod head:

Mating 3/8 Manfrotto plate

Thoughts?

A few months ago, I was very close to pulling the trigger on a new Z8. The $5000 purchase price (including sales tax) was in-hand. Then I sat down and added up the cost of "required extras" that would be needed to put the new camera into service:
$400 - new memory cards
$250 - FTZ adaptor
$ 60 - extra battery
$1250-basic "Z" lens
(These prices all plus tax.)

My $4500 camera was suddenly going to cost over $7000...$6000 if I just used my existing lenses. And that was just for the basics.

It would have been fun, but the money is back in the drawer for now.

As has been pointed out, there are accessories, and there are "mandatory extras." Cameras represent just a starting point, whether this is a hobby, a profession, or an adjunct to a different activity. Not every camera requires everything on your list, at least for me. But it does require some support items. Those can vary, depending on whether the new camera is "in system" or "out of system."

If your main point is buying a new major piece of equipment necessitates additional accessories, I more or less agree but it is a different set of accessories for me. Less stuff than you get.

New Camera:

Extra Battery
1 or 2 sets of SD Cards
Camera Strap
USD Data Transfer Cable
If available, AC/DC Adapter Cord to operate camera directly off of AC Power.

New Lens:

Protective Filter, such as 0, 1A, 1B, Clear Glass (B+W or Heliopan from B&H or Adorama)
Be sure I have enough clean Micrifiber Lens Wipes

New Tripod / Tripod Head:

I don't need a new Tripod regularly, I own three Gitzo Tripod Legs now plus a couple other tripods. But I have been replacing my old 1/4" screw Gitzo heads (3 Ball Heads, 2 Tri-axial tilt) with newer Arca-Swiss plate Gitzo heads. I have 1 new Gitzo Arca-Swiss Ball head so far, need a second. Much of my large Gitzo collection was obtained used.

I have not been able to find a dedicated L-bracket or frame for my several Pentax cameras and Fujifilm X-100T. I have to swap between portrait and landscape using my Tripod Heads (often not fun).

New Electronic Flash/Strobe:

I have purchased so infrequently and I still have antient ones that can be used with an adapter or RF system. My new Li-Ion Powered one is great and recharges almost instantly.

New Gear Bag:

I have a bunch of old school camera bags of varying sizes. These were for Film Cameras so they are set up for traveling with the lenses removed and in the bag with the camera bodies. Therefor I have trouble fitting a DSLR with long Telephoto Lens on in the bags. When going on automobile photo shoots I prefer to carry multiple cameras and not change lenses. Dust/Dirt thing. Someday I should think about getting a more efficient bag.

This serves as an excellent reminder that I have stuff that I was convinced that I needed that will never see the light of day.

At the risk of drawing ire, I disagree. My wife makes several trips to the store because she doesn’t have a list.

Oh…I like to quick-change heads, hence the Manfrotto.

It depends on how badly you treat your gear. I buy gear when I need it not when I want it. I use a D850 and all the lenses i need from 40+ years of my hobby. I have a lens that Nikon will not repair because they say they don't have parts. Nikon 28-70 2.8D!! Lens takes excellent photos, just squeaks when focusing. Use what you have and become a great photographer, not a commenter of a manufacturers gear!

Good points, and I agree.

I answered the OP with a list but that does not mean I go thru or use the "list" often. Many of my lenses are 40+ years old, and only one of my Camera bodies is currently manufactured. I buy used when I can.

Same process, just a difference in timing. 😉

Makes sense.

I use the peak design quick connect system so I don't need a new strap. Also use Arca Swiss camera mounting system.

So you currently do not have a Z camera? I ask because the battery and Memory are common, and the Z8 has an SD memory slot as well. You must have some of those lying around. The old DSLR batteries still work in my Z7. It's also showing up as 3999.95 on the web site.

I'm not helping you save money!! I also want a Z8. I thought for a minute my Z7 was malfunctioning but it was just my bad eyes, see https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-791779-1.html. Rats. So now I have to wait. I have set myself a goal, for a project I am working on, (not photography related) and when that is done I will reward myself with a Z8. (Assuming other unexpected expenses don't take my camera stash).

The largest lens I had, for a long time, was a 70-200 Nikkor used on a film camera.
During the Dot.Com error I invested $2,000 in a stock and told my friend that if it ever went to $10,000 I was going to get a Nikkon 500mm F/4.0.

It was just months later when my friend came to my desk and said it's time to get the lens. I got the lens, an F100 and a few accessories, with a few dollars left over.

Since then I have had to spend a lot more time saving for every toy in the toy box.

Gotta enjoy life when you can.

I have compatible batteries and memory, but no plans to retire my current cameras. Resale value right now doesn't support disposal at this moment. Plan is actually to give them away when the time comes, so the batteries and memory would go with them.

Lens cases/Battery Cases? I have a big camera bag for house storage with multiple pockets. When I'm out and about....everything I'm taking goes into my backpack. Brevite has nice zip pouch that I carry my batteries and memory cards. I've never bought cases for either when buying new cards or batteries.

As mentioned by others....why would you buy a strap that you need a strap pad for?

How many tripods have you bought that you would need to buy another adaptor...if you needed one in the first place? I've got two tripods that I've had for years.
