JPEG taken with a Nikon Z7. These were sunlit leaves but what is that? It is completely blown out. I cannot believe that is real. It looks like a digital artifact to me. What am I missing?

Thoughts, ideas?

This is a screen shot I used to put a red circle around the area in question.

I thought this was a photograph. Obviously not or it wouldn't be here.

Yup, the leaf is curled at the edge.
Definitely not an artifact.

You know how to click to the 1:1 pixel-level details, right? Your full-sized JPEG clearly shows the curled underside of the leaf, including veins in the details.

Light does strange things. A local woman complained online about how blinding the new blacktop pavement is on the local highway. Blacktop blinding? Sure enough. When the sun is at the right angle, the new blacktop looks like a frozen river - white and shiny. If you drive in the other direction, it is a deep black.

I am pretty sure it is just a blown highlight on a curled edge of the leaf. Here is another example from the same image.

Looks like a piece of leaf curled up enough to catch the sun.

Blown highlight of under side of leaf that is folder over and at just the right angle to reflect the sun! I have gotten them from time to time. Nope, not an apparition or soul of the plant or X-file. Can Happen with artificial light if the dynamic range is too high. I get specular highlights off shiny objects all the time even indoors.

Nope. It, doesn't have to be if too much light reflects off of it. Go ten or stops over exposed and you can probably make something black record as white. Camera meters expose for middle grey. Look up Ansel Adams Zone System or anyone else's book about it or exposure.
