I agree with you. The RF 100-400 is reason enough to buy a R7 or another R-body camera. I can't believe such an inexpensive and light lens can be so fantastic at autofocusing and tracking, and sharp. It even works with the RF TC1.4 and TC 2.0. The OP should go for it!

Thanks BKWaters, I appreciate your opinion!

I like my r7 but I came from a full frame 6d mk i. I wanted the extra reach for wildlife. It works fine with my ef lenses. The eye focus is good but not perfect, it does miss occasional. The 30 frames per second is nice but it’s a lot of pictures to go through. Never had a 80d so can’t say it would be worth the upgrade.

Thanks 317tman, I appreciate your opinion!

I'm thinking of getting a Canon R7 and would like people who own them to tell me how they like them good or bad. I currently have a Canon 80d and I think it would be a good step for me to get into the mirrorless ecosystem.
Thanks,

The R7 is a great camera. It is packed with features and capabilities and there is a lot to learn. It will keep you busy trying to master it. The mirrorless camera systems open up new options. I went from a 7D II to an R5, then R7 as a second body and APS-C crop. Although I loved the 7D II and often think I should have just kept it instead of selling it, I would never think of going back to DSLR now.

Upgrade for what? Do you shoot primarily wildlife or sports? With a cropped 24MP sensor in the EOS 80D, are you still not close enough to your wildlife subjects that you can't crop into the image enough, and you'll do better with 32MP files?

Is it really a step-up? Have you really exhausted one of Canon's best cropped DSLRs ever released?

Has someone hacked the CHG_CANON account? I've never seen you miss an opportunity to encourage the switch to mirrorless cameras :-)

I made the switch to Canon mirrorless a while back to get better focus with birds in flight as well as to shoot more video while looking through the viewfinder in daylight where the back display is hard to see. I kept my old favorite Canon DSLR just in case but never use it anymore. There are so many reasons the newer generation of cameras are better. The real proof though is when I review my shots over the years. I can see distinct improvements in the image quality over the years as I have upgraded my equipment.

Paul ( CHG_Canon ) makes very valid points. It is your money.

Not really at all.
Paul is totally incorrect in this case and comments.

A mirrorless camera will make you a better photographer, in fact, a better human. My point of the probing questions is to lead to the 'right' mirrorless camera, the candidate body that balances all the best features with the best price that best meets the individual's needs. The EOS R7 doesn't seem to meet this threshold for this community member, based on their stated needs and their current advanced EOS DSLR.

Paul,

Please elaborate on what other models of Canon mirrorless cameras you feel would be better suited to my style of photography besides for the R7 model.
Thanks,

I'd have to know your current lenses to be confident in any specific selection. My attitude on mirrorless is IBIS is a must. The other features of mirrorless cameras, in general, depend on what the camera is intended for. The 'new' price of an EOS R7 and EOS R8 are the same from my quick look-up this evening. I'd look at the full-frame R8 over the R7, just keep your EOS 80D for the crop-factor, if ever needed.

First of all I love my 80d. I shoot scenery, wildlife occasional sports and whatever is interesting at the time.
I have heard that the eye focus and the focus in general is much better on the mirrorless Canons than on my model.
I thought the R7 would be a step up cropped version of what I have.
That's why I'm asking for people to tell me how they like their R7s

It is a step up for what you shoot. The crop factor of the r7, resolution (crop factor), eye autofocus, 30 FPS, IBIS, and it uses the entire screen for focusing.
Since you shoot wildlife and sports then this is what I would want. You should at least rent one and see how you like it!

Thanks Dave!

I think it's the right camera for me. I like the crop factor which is the same as my 80d and it has 32 megapixels vs the R8 full frame 24 megapixels.

I had the 7D then the 7D MKii and now the R7. I will not go back to DSLR after having the mirrorless R7 because what you see is what you get. Plus, the focusing is so much faster with the R7.

A friend of mine had the 5D, latest mark whatever that is. He went on a photoshoot and was so disappointed because he had full frame and could not get the the better wildlife shots in the everglades that those with APS-C got. He purchased the Canon 7D MKii and uses his crop sensor camera over 90% of the time and lets his full frame camera sit.

I much prefer the crop sensor of the R7 mirrorless plus the extra features vs the DSLR.

You cannot go wrong with the R7.
