These scene's were taken a few miles east of the San Rafael Reef in south central Utah. The Reef images were taken at a distance of several miles and really don't illustrate the enormity of the Reef's upthrust. The San Rafael River continues south some thirty miles where it joins the Fremont River and Muddy Creek to form the Dirty Devil River. The Dirty Devil River then continues south approximately eighty miles to join the Colorado River as it is about to flow into Lake Powell near Hite's Marina. Whew! Nice photos of the area. I always love driving 170 as it passes through the Reef. It really needs to be experienced to understand. Keep the photos coming.
Beautifully composed set, Jim. Loved your description, I thought I was reading a page from the Lewis & Clark expedition.😊

These typify some of the magnificent scenery you can find while driving through Utah without going into a national park. I could be very happy spending time along the river.
Your pictures are fantastic, having seen them up close and personal you're right it is hard to do justice but you came awfully close. I didn't know Mirror lake highway had opened yet. Enjoy the cooler weather.
