In the photography group as a previous member in Tx they were know, affectionately, as Canonites!
And those of us who weren't were simply the draconian Nikonians...............

Great group of people. I think we were known as the Breakfast and Lunch group that had a vested photography intetest......

My brother and another attorney were just having this discussion about UHH and why it is showing signs of failing and growing long in the tooth headed to dinosaur status. It for exactly the reason that most of the commentary and posts come from a core group of old guys who rarely post any photos, are constantly badgering new posters, inciting negativity, either due to boredom or shear jealousy because they can no longer hold a camera, have lost their vision both physically or creatively, do nothing to promote photography other than to complain. And they are individuals who opt to remain hidden behind goofy screen names and remain anonymous. Most likely would never say the things they do to a person face to face (especially my brother and I), and have a distinct ability to fail at "keeping peace in the valley". It is one thing to be creative, or have critical thinking. It is another thing to be critical on others and a constant fault finder and crush creative thought processes.

A group of us wish the real owner/administrator of this website would take a long hard look at what's going on and modernize/update UHH to grow it into the jewel it once was. AI may very well be that opportunity. Never stop dreaming.

How right you are. Admin has allowed this to become a free for all, unmoderated mess. I started two sub forums : travel and photo critique. But the main forum is in competition with these sub forums. Meaning travel advice was allowed to remain on the main forum. Why bother then? And goofy diatribes are allowed. There’s currently a posting on the the viability of Olympus (OM) systems. It could be an interesting business discussion with varying points of view but the usual suspects drag the thing into the dirt. Some users need to be warned and then removed as users. Meanwhile a glance at gallery reveals a pretty low bar for photographic artistry.
Thank heavens for a few pros who hang out here to give solid advice. Otherwise we have one line snarks, arguments, name calling and the like.

A little hands on moderation would sure help the site. I only look once in a while unless I’m traveling with the some down time, such as now.

And am happier for it

Maybe Canonions could either be fried or Canonized. Where does that leave Sonyons?

That might be slow broiled or sautéd?

I think 'Canonites' should be the term.

I was a Canon snob for 40 years! Then I woke up and realized there are better cameras available and I no longer shoot Canon. I really feel that nowadays both Canon and Nikon are relying on there names and history to keep people believing!

A solid up vote for that - as Ansel Adams once said to me " A camera is just a box with a hole in it"

Like the old joke: What part of the automobile is responsible for the majority of accidents ??
The NUT behind the wheel.
-
So goes the wisdom: What's responsible for the greatest photographs?
It's the photographer behind the (?AI in the) camera.
-
Most of us are locked into our camera choices by the stable of lenses we've collected.
I've used Canon since I got my 10D back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth.
The 10D is long gone - but I still have the lenses which I now use on my 80D.
-
Recently I started looking for a Single camera I could use for 90% of everything I wanted to do, and some that I've NOT done before. Sony (who I previously hated to like due to their predatory market stance with the 'memory stick' debacle) provided my answer with their DSC-RX10 III. A 24 - 600mm zoom (the longest Canon I have is an EFS 18-200), excellent controls, all in a single package (bought on eBay, used, excellent condition). Other than my model 13 iFoan - the Sony will be the only camera I take on vacation.
-
I've put my Canon 7D Mk-1 and Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS USM (USA lens) on eBay, but will keep my 80D and 4 other lenses for odd things in the local area as they crop up (wide angle with my 10-24mm Tamron, etc).

Exactly right. I don't visit here much anymore. Seems to be less and less useful information on UHH. Mainly just the same group of folks making inane comments and brand bashing. I'm not in to that.

Thread hijacking with irrelevant, asinine, worthless comments doesn't help much either. But since we're already there...

I haven't noticed much change over the years. Admin has made at least some effort to control nonsense, such as starting the attic and assigning section mods. Oh, but you wouldn't know it because that happened before you joined. Might be nice if you knew the good ol' days before disparaging the site.
