I wonder if Sony is supplying technology for cell phones, the way they sell electronics to other camera companies.
Ya think?

Well...they certainly do...but not with their own models...though not heavily marketed...does very well.

Sony is behind...almost every cellphone out there...in some way...they make coin either way.

But this is not about the phone per se...this is about integrating their phone with their cameras.

Something no other camera company can even attempt...not without a decade and tons of coin investment.

It's a serious edge....and I doubt Sony will miss that opportunity.

I can't wait...just going to make shooting images that much more enjoyable...and better.

I can use my Apple cellphone to control my Pentax camera and to copy photos back-and-forth. That is good enough for me - in fact it is so slow that I hardly ever do it, but I can.

Interesting video.

I believe it's a no-brainer that tech companies hold back on technology so they can introduce an updated model later. I first became aware of this with Apple products. According to T&C, the head of Sony said that in an interview. They hold back and then leap ahead to surprise and mislead the competition. I like the idea of having the Android OS in a camera. More performance! As it is a now, it takes a huge amount of programming to a camera's software to add features. With Android, making changes would be much easier and faster.

I plan to spend the rest of my life in the future, and it's going to be great! 😲

I foresee Sony becoming the #1 camera company in terms of performance and features within a few years.
Interesting video. br br I believe it's a no-brai... (show quote)

I don’t appreciate having camera software based on Android - Google has too much of a hand in it, and since Google makes their money selling information, I don’t trust them to keep my information out of their profitable flow.

Do we really WANT our cameras to behave like phones?...
If I had that I wouldn't have to carry a phone. LOL.

One way in which sell phones have taken market share is in the ease of sharing. Camera manufacturer have been very slow to compete with this problem. In the meantime mucho-dollars have moved from cameras to sell phones. Point and shoots almost cease to exist.

Younger people particularly, want to be able to instant-share so Camera manufacturers are losing market share with the younger generation. And those young kids are the customers of the future. No young kids no future.

Sony more than the others, tends to think out of the box and come up with innovative solutions to problems. Maybe that's what they are doing here.

I just watched the video and found it interesting enough to watch to the end. I always wondered how cell phones seemed to be capable of things that cameras can't do. ... ---
Cell phone pics look great on the phone. But, at least to my eye, cell phone pics can tend to have a "crunchy" look to them. I personally don't want to port that look to my camera.

What makes you think that would be an issue?

Because when I said crunchy I didn't mean it as a complement. I don't want that look from my camera.

What makes you think they would design a camera, with all their experience, that would give you a cell phone effect? I think Sony is better than that.

If that is the case then it wouldn't be a problem. I guess the question is what is it about the cell phone camera that sometimes yields that result?

Can't answer that as I don't even have, or want, a cell phone.

Seems some are missing the point. Tony didn't suggest that Sony would downgrade its cameras. He simply postulated that Sony might adopt an Android operating system that would allow for faster operation and transfer speeds plus increased versatility and customization. If this happens, we won't see any decrease in imaging quality.

That depends on how their software is organized right now. If it is currently hand-coded in an optimized manner, their programming would go faster, but would run more slowly. I kind of doubt that Tony knows what he is talking about.

Correct on both points. I considered that an Android OS might be overkill and Sony may have already achieved max efficiency with what it requires, and to be honest I don't know enough about coding to even speculate -- but when have I ever allowed lack of knowledge to stop me?

I am a retired programmer, and the knowledge I’ve gained over the years is the reason which makes me willing to speculate - both about their {T&C} knowledge and about what they say.

Check out their latest Youtube video. Granted, it is clickbait and whether it may affect Canon is pure speculation. But... the how of it interests me. The time horizon of functioning ILC Android phones/cameras as early as next year... wow! If it happens, I'm guessing it will be the dawn of a new age when coupled with AI.

The Zeiss ZX-1 has an android OS and doesnt seem to be all that great of a camera. Wonder if given the Sony relationship this was a sandbagged version of something great.
