Johnny and I arose early to drive 200 miles and arrive on location by 0800. The Ft Lauderdale area had serious flooding at critical nesting time this year and I'm afraid most of the pairs lost their eggs or chicks. We only found one burrow with owlets and and didn't discovered that until high noon on a cloudless day -- so deep shadows and reflections plagued our photography in the open fields.
These small owls stand about nine inches tall. With them it's all about the eyes. They have the most incredible large yellow eyes and large black pupils. Please enjoy the downloads.
Photogenic is right. These cute little birds are usually hard to photograph
Nice set
NICE work ! ......thanks for sharing
Excellent photographs. What a bunch of little cuties.
Dennis
Nice photos, thanks for posting these so we can enjoy them too.
They are cute little fellows but have been threatened by the weather and development in their nesting areas. My wife just recently returned from one of her many trips to Florida to photograph wildlife and was disappointed in that many areas that she had previously photographed the owls now had buildings and parking lots on them.
Always enjoy seeing these cuties so thanks for sharing your images with us, Hereford!!
An excellent set, Hereford. It's a shame about the flooding but nature will sometimes do that.

Exceptional images. Do the owls always seem so alert, so seemingly eager to pose?
Thanks for sharing.
Glad to see the long drive paid off in some great shots. Really fun to view these images.

They are naturally curious and alert for danger, which is why they spend time looking at the photographer invading their territory. That gives opportunity for some good shots. The little owlets seem unusually impressed with people.
Mom maintains alert when the vulnerable little members are outside the burrow. When she issues a warning call the youngsters immediately scurry into the burrow.
