Johnny and I arose early to drive 200 miles and arrive on location by 0800. The Ft Lauderdale area had serious flooding at critical nesting time this year and I'm afraid most of the pairs lost their eggs or chicks. We only found one burrow with owlets and and didn't discovered that until high noon on a cloudless day -- so deep shadows and reflections plagued our photography in the open fields.

These small owls stand about nine inches tall. With them it's all about the eyes. They have the most incredible large yellow eyes and large black pupils. Please enjoy the downloads.

Nice images. Love those little cuties. We were in Florida at the time of that flooding, but didn't realize there are Burrowing Owls in that area of the east coast. There were many owls lost due to Ian & another storm that had hit the west coast.

Folks interested in seeing/shooting these owls should visit Cape Coral FL, on the west coast of FL just north of Naples. Cape Coral is home to the largest concentration of burrowing owls anywhere. CC is fanatical about protecting their birds which can be easily spotted pretty much anywhere in town. No need for a map or “secret” location. They are literally everywhere and their nests, since they are in the ground, are clearly marked to prevent inadvertent damage. In fact, there are serious fines for anyone harassing the birds, but photographers are welcome and plentiful.

Google Cape Coral owls and you’ll find tons of info. For example -

Btw - hurricane Ian visited after fledging season, so fortunately had little impact on chicks and adults.

Glad you could find these Hereford. Did you check with anyone in the area about how other Burrowing Owls nest made out?
