I have all my packages delivered to an independent owned hardware store, hence avoiding Porch Pirates. One package to be delivered Saturday by USPS was never delivered. They claim the store was closed during their attempted delivery at 9:30. Interesting since the store was opened at 8AM, and staffed by four employees.
That is typical of USPS here. Maybe it is better where you live.

Bad service and then lie about it!!!!
Mail service is a great option...and with the internet pretty much a finished product for shopping...easy to do...convenient.
It's also putting a huge strain on the transportation system...
The other major difference is the flip side...returns...which have to use the very same system...adding to the workload.
Customer returns for online purchases have a whopping 30% return rate compared to only 8.9% for in-store purchases.
Everything has to be factored in...it all counts.
Since we add everything in...they are both heavily unionized...that doesn't help the customer either.

Where I live in Southern California, Amazon has installed a "hub" (an array of locked boxes). This hub serves the defined local community with Amazon deliveries. When a delivery occurs, the Amazon system notifies the recipient by text message with a code for entering into the hub. A door opens to a box containing the delivered product. So far, I have yet to experience a significant bug in this system.
I have an Amazon Prime account that includes same-day and next-day delivery of some items.

Yes, we have Amazon lockers at Whole Foods here locally. I’ve seen people use them when I’m shopping.

In my opinion it's all about the delivery person, not the company. There are lots of stories that contradict each other. I do believe that the incompetence is protected by their unions. We can definitely get by without any one of them.
I agree with you. Where I live in south eastern Pennsylvania, the USPS does a pretty good job. They deliver the mail 6 days per week and I've received every package I've been expecting, to the correct address and on time. I have nothing to complain about their service.
Most problems originate at the top of any organization. Lack of leadership, vision, and resistance to change tend to trickle down through the ranks. Employees become frustrated because they see the impact firsthand and they have no authority to change it. Eventually, the attitude becomes, "It's not my job", "I'm not paid to think", and "I just do what I'm told, and nothing more". Battles are often lost due to a lack of leadership skills, not by those on the firing line trying to keep themselves alive.

WAIT. Reading Tamsey in Texas, reminded me to tell you all to NOT mail any checks, ever!! Several months ago, I was introduced to "Washed Checks". I wrote a check for $110.00 to an ankle service, and learned that they never received it. Then my bank informed me that I ""wrote"" a check for $4,200. Someone got their hands on that check I wrote, and put into the USPS system. They "washed" the payee and the dollar amounts, up to $4,200. My bank is the one that caught it. They told me to come in, and they will close all of my accounts, including credit and debits cards. Then they would open new accounts for me, to include new debit and credit cards. My bank is so good that before we even completed that process right in the bank, they were notified that the Fraud Department has deposited $4,200 back into my account. They then told me they experience "washed check" at the rate of one a week. As a result, we refuse to write another check, EVER. And yes, there is a way to get around those companies that want to be paid by check.
So, don't write another check. Protect yourself.

There is a huge national problem with checks being stolen out of the blue corner mailboxes (Google it). Keys are available for sale on the dark web. In addition, in our area (just outside of DC), several post delivery people have been robbed at gunpoint. I had a check written for county taxes stolen out of a blue box, washed and presented to the bank for $20,000 (originally about $4,000). Fortunately, I was able to stop payment before the bank processed it. That was the last time I ever deposited mail anywhere but the post office. It is now standard in our area that no one mails anything of value in a corner mailbox.

I'm very lucky because in our rural area we receive great service from USPS, UPS, and FedEx. The only exception is when we have a new driver on our route.
For FedEx, and UPS you can go online and give your delivery preferences.
Regarding the "Check Washing" I use the recommended Pentel, EnerGel, with Permanent Gel Ink pens. I also drop our mail with checks in the drive-by collection box outside of our post office.
I too dislike writing ANY checks, balancing the checkbook, etc.
To that end, I use a Costco no-fee credit card for Everything possible. The yearly rebate every year far exceeds my yearly Costco dues.
While I do carry cash, I Rarely use cash.

I ordered a camera plate from B&H. They sent it by USPS. It went to a main hub just a few short miles from my home. They sent it to another main hum about 60 miles away who then sent it to Portland Oregon, I live in Tacoma, Wa area, from Portland it was sent to San Juan Puerto Rico. Eventually after its vacation it reached me a couple of weeks later. Here the worse is FedEx, UPS is really good in my area.

If you don't mind answering, how did you know to stop payment on the check?
Did the bank contact you to ask if the check was correct, etc.?
Scary stuff!!!

I see complaints from readers here about UPS/FedEx/USPS employees not being fired when the committed thefts. I was a truck driver for a branch of FedEx for a year and I see that drivers are doing things now that we would have been fired for -leaving packages without a signature, etc (I have myself had this happen too many times with important life-saving medicine). In my day, we couldn't just leave a package unless there was permission on the bill-of-lading. The problem really is that these companies are having problems getting reliable people to work even though FedEx pays very well and UPS drivers, at least in this area, are members of the Teamsters and are supposed to be reliable. The delivery companies' answer is to lower their standards by necessity. During the height of the "Pandemic" California's answer was to pay people more in unemployment than they could earn by working. The current problems are one of the unforeseen results of this program.
I have all of my packages and mail delivered to my USPS Post Office Box. I can't remember the last time I had a shipping/receiving issue.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Our postal service is spotty at best. There are days with no mail and when I went to Florida and put a block on the mail the mail was left on our front steps. Horrible service!
