John, I'm very happy with my BenQ SW2700PT and do a lot of photo editing. I work with a dual monitor set up and this is my editing monitor (my 2nd older one holds my panels). I purchased it late November 2020 from B&H with a holiday price promotion discount. Good luck. Bev

Depending on your vision, the larger the display the more you might benefit from a curved monitor. I have a Viotek and consider it essential for my eyesight situation.

Look for a 1 billion color monitor with at least HD resolution, preferably IPS type screen, as close to 100% Adobe RGB and sRGB color rendition as possible... here are your top 16:9, 27" candidates other than Apple's own displays:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/products/monitors-and-displays/ci/25766?filters=fct_a_gaming-monitors_4911%3Acreative-monitor%2Cfct_aspect-ratio_4713%3A16-9%2Cfct_color-gamut_5893%3Aadobe-rgb-100%7Cadobe-rgb-99%7Csrgb-100%2Cfct_display-colors_2717%3A1.07-billion%2Cfct_screen-size_953%3A27in

Apple's 27" screens:

To me the BenQ seem a good value... you appear to get a lot for your money. Their SW270C and SW271C are designed specifically for photographers. The SW270 is HD, while the more expensive SW271 is 4K. Both are also available bundled with a Colorchecker calibration suite. I'm pretty sure both also come with a shade hood. The SW270C is shown with one, while the SW271C is not shown that way, but probably includes one.

I am seriously considering replacing my aging iMac with a new M1. That means I will have to purchase a separate monitor. Because I am used to my 27”, I will want another in comparable size.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good quality monitor suitable for photo editing? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

LG 27UQ850-W is very close in performance to the much more expensive Apple. Currently $496.99- Amazon. Do your Due Diligence and check out multiple sources multiple manufacturers.

John, I have really enjoyed my Dell U2720QM. Not ridiculously expensive but the color spectrum and UHD is stunning and shows more colors than I can differentiate with my eyes. It did take a little "getting used to" with a 32" at my desk but I wouldn't trade it for anything now.

I'm using an ACER 24" ips monitor for a few years now. It works really well, colors are true to My Canon Color Science. It cost $139 from Amazon. I think there is a larger version. I bought a 19" for my wife for about $100.

A little over a year ago Costco had 32" - 34" monitors on sale. I picked up a LG monitor (2560 X 1440) and am very pleased with it. As best as I can recall, it only cost around $300.

The LG 27U850-W is a GREAT monitor. Its color gamut is wide, it's easily calibrated, and stable. It has multiple USB-C ports to power your (and my) M1 MacBook and several peripherals like printers, scanners, external drives...
I have nothing but good things to say about mine. I've also used mine as the central monitor in a three monitor array for X-Plane 12, and a friend uses his for a similar array for gaming.

I currently run the LG 27UL600-W-very similar to the 850. I am working on my Minister of Finance as I wish to up grade to an Apple M1 and I think the 850 will be my second monitor.

Dell or BenQ brand, both are excellent.

LG 27UP850-W 27” UHD (3840 x 2160) IPS Monitor

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=LG+27UP850-W+27”+UHD+%283840+x+2160%29+IPS+Monitor

I have it connected to an M1 MacBook Air. It charges the Air over the USB-C cable. It has HDMI and DisplayPort inputs as well, and comes with cables for all three standards. It calibrates well to match the monitor on the laptop.

You might want to wait until later this year, as Apple is rumored to be working on an M3 iMac.

Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Hub Monitor - U2723QE. Its 1.07 billion colors puts it in a class that most monitors don't reach. Suggest you try to find a place that has one on display, if you need to verify!

Most of the rumor sites are suggesting Apple will skip M2 in the iMac and drop an M3 into it instead. But rumor sites are quite often misled...
