Perhaps he thinks fighting hunger is more important than keeping a photographic review site open. He could fund DP personally but the reason he bought and the reason he closes DP it's all business decision. Perhaps he doesn't care about photography.

It is interesting that PetaPixel, a company of only 35 people, can afford to keep at least a Youtube channel for Chris and Jordan going forward. I am sure Jeff Bezos could keep the entire DPReview community going for "peanuts" compared to what larger sums he just wastes on other personal ventures that dont make much profit.

Cheers and best to you.

He definitely can but I guess he thinks the good for photographers isn't in his interest. He bought DP because he thought it could make him money by helping selling cameras thru his website. Now he decides that it's not so.

I know of him.
But I've never watched any of his videos.
I've no desire to do so.

Good to see Tony is monetizing on the announcement.

The fact is DP closing means less competition for Tony so methinks those expressions of angst from him are crocodile tears.

I bet you didn't even watch all of it before commenting, LOL.

Actually watch the video and see Tony explain how DPReview was instrumental to him and countless others at the start of digital photography, and the unique services they continued to provide, and the gap that no one is set to fill. Tony cant do what their entire DPReview team was doing. And Tony knows them personally and he feels for them and the greater loss for the photo community at large.

Cheers

I never knew that. Thanks for the info!

It turns out that this works easily for newer reviews.

For older ones, that had a different, multi-page structure, you would have to hit "Ctrl P" and save each page individually, and then merge the pages if you wanted a single document.

Doable, but not as quick.

If anyone is interested (and I know some are not, but some are), here is a petition on change dot org asking Amazon to reconsider. Probably won't do much good, but it's at least something people can do besides gripe.

I first started reading the site 25 years ago when Brit, Phil Askey ran it. It was a brilliant idea, and turned into one of the best sources of information about cameras and photo gear you could find. As revenue dwindled over the last few years, it did lose a bit of luster, but it is still a primary source of information.

I wonder if anyone will pick up the slack? I also wonder what the team of Chris and Jordan, the DP Review video creators, will do. They are based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and used to run The Camera Store TV channel. Their work is fair, balanced, measured, insightful, and detailed. I hope they land another gig or start their own YouTube entity.

UPDATE: A quick view of the DP Review YouTube channel indicates that Chris and Jordan have something in the works for their own thing... I'm sure it will be as good as usual.

According to Tony Northrop Chris Nichols and Jordan Drake will continue, moving over to sponsorship by PetaPixel

I liked to be able to search on particular item(s) on the old site (DPReview) and see the document(ed) info on the item if it was reviewed.
I wonder if that will be available on the new site, or just videos on what they <recently> reviewed.

From what I have heard so far - Amazon is just taking the site down and is not planning to archive anything from the site - which sucks.
