I show them my brake lights, if possible. This has become a problem on Long Island since they started to allow pickup trucks on the parkways.

I've had this post on my mind for a while, but l wasn't going to post it until I recently heard two other people comment on it. Pickup truck drivers tailgate!

Naturally, I don't mean every pickup driver, but when I see one approaching in my rearview mirror, I tense-up because I know that in a few minutes, all I will see is the grill. It makes no difference how fast I am going. It's never fast enough. I'm not one of those old fogies who drives ten mph under the limit. With a speed limit of 55, I refuse to go over 60. We have four police departments here, and I see people stopped almost every time I drive into town.

When I get tailgated, my standard procedure is to check my speedo to make sure I'm driving over 55. I'll speed up to 59, if I'm not already there. If he's still on my bumper after a mile, or so, I'll take my foot off the gas and slow down to about 50. Sometimes, they take the hint and drift back. If not, I look for a place to pull off the road and let him pass.

I know what the first excuse is going to be: they're going to work, and time is money. "Going to work" is not a legal excuse to speed or tailgate. In most cases, they're going home, going shopping, or going to get a cup of coffee. Basically, they're stupid rednecks driving big trucks, and they think they have to right to do whatever they want.

I've had four pickups over the years, and I always drove like a normal person.

There. I said it.

I tend to agree. While not all pickup drivers tailgate, I have noticed that many seem to be very aggressive drivers that tend to bully other drivers. And, pickups are getting larger and more intimidating every year. I was raised on a farm and we had Chevy half-ton pickup that we used for everything from hauling cattle to fertilizer. That truck would fit in the bed of most pickups I see on the road today. And, the interesting thing today is that most people never really use the truck to haul anything. I have hauled more yard and garden items in the trunk of my sedan than most of these trucks have.

When I read your post, I was reminded of a lady I used to work with. She came in to work one early morning looking shaken up. When we asked what was wrong she said that she had been driving down the interstate and a truck came up behind her and started tailgating her. She sped up but he stayed on her bumper. She kept speeding up and before she knew it was going 85-90 mph. She said she had to keep that up until she got to her exit. She said that she was just too scared to slow down thinking that they were trying to run her off the road. This is an example of an aggressive driver that should lose his license. The interstate at that time in the morning was mostly deserted and they had plenty of room to move to another lane and go on. But they chose to terrorize this lady instead.

To be fair though, I have also seen this behavior in these monster SUVs driven by women. I guess the size of the vehicle makes some feel superior to others on the road.

While the new trucks are big. I doubt that they have beds as big as your little truck. Today people just want a big and tall vehicle. The bed is of little use.

I'm with Jerry here. There are some that definitely loom, and it ain't just because those objects look closer than they really are.

You must be one lonely man, Jerry I base my opinion on reading some of your posts/complaints.

Because I drive a pickup (my only means of transportation) you consider me a redneck? Get off of your self righteous high horse! I live in the country and my 3/4 ton crew cab pickup is a multi purpose vehicle and my only vehicle.

Whether taking my grandkids to a movie, grocery shopping or hauling hay for horses, my pickup is invaluable. Many people drive 4x4 or “lifted” truck’s because of rough terrain (in Arizona where I used to live and now in east Texas). Yes, some drive trucks with extreme lifts and oversized tires.

Yes, us all inclusive, lower class rednecks driving pickups do look bigger in your rear view mirror. And yes, some, a very few do tailgate. Speaking of tailgating, I see more cars doing tailgating far more than pickups. My truck is neither a 4x4 or lifted. When a car comes up so close behind me all I can see is his windshield, he is too close. Especially considering where I live in east Texas, the common speed limit is 70mph.

Most drivers around here are pretty courteous. Those that tailgate will usually pass you at their first opportunity regardless of your speed.

So, I am, in your opinion, a low class, 80 year old, truck driving, tailgating, redneck. So be it.

My my, you are touchy!!
If the shoe Fits wear it!! If the shoe don't fit you have nothing to bitch about.
I do agree with Jerry about tailgaters.
I drive two lane roads a lot and we have a LOT of tailgaters out here Cars and Trucks (not just pickups.) the cars I don't care about so much except wondering if the have Insurance , a few years back I hit and severely injured a Deer because of being tailgated by an SUV driving so close I could not see his head lights I also did some damage (about $400 to my explorer and the tail gaiter passed me on the shoulder without so much as a nod, plus I had to put the deer down and drag it out of the road.
I have been rear ended 5 times in my life By tailgaters lucky there was very little to no damage to my car.

I don't have neither vehicles but I search the internet (how reliable that is?) and found that the Fit max speed is about 115MPH and the Silverado is 114MPH. So in theory Jerry can out run a pickup truck tailgating him.

Jerry, I agree with you, As the pickups get larger (especially thr newer ones) the tailgating increases, as if the driver is attempting to make a statement !

I pull a trailer so I have a hitch ball sticking out most of the time - that has a tendency to keep tailgaters back. I was rear ended once - sitting at a stop light watching the idiot coming at me - no where to go - she was reading the damn phone - witnesses stayed for the cops and told them that they saw here reading her phone which she tried to deny - traffic cams (front and back) are a must anymore.

Where I live in the Dallas metroplex I see exotic sport cars often like Lamborghini and Ferrari. Cars that can do near 200MPH but they never tailgate me.

Pick-up trucks have gotten so much bigger. Even the stock ones that have not been lifted, you can't stand by the side and reach the center of the hood. I'm in the same boat as you Jerry, if I'm 5 over the speed limit, don't ride my bumper. Also put in the tailgating category, are the BMW and Mercedes drivers because the commercials for these cars say they own the road. The speed limit is the speed limit for a reason. Cars with collision avoidance systems and all the airbags give drivers a false sense of security. I just can't wait for the autonomous driven cars to tailgate, but they will hopefully have a program the prevents that act.

It's those darn ambulances that seem to be tailgating me. They honk and flash their lights at me and they always drive like are in a hurry to get somewhere. Well, as far as I'm concerned, the speed limit is the law, not just a good idea.😜

I share your complaint about pickup truck drivers - they are truly rude. It’s especially bad at night as their headlights are at my eye level and most of the trucks have four headlights all on high beam. If they were a few feet farther back, they also usually have their fog lights on too, with no fog in sight. Whatever happened to yellow fog lights? I really don’t understand the proliferation of these overgrown pickups in this part of my state - the average annual income here is not as much as most of those trucks cost. I would imagine the lease or loan payment on those behemoths is close to half the monthly income of those folks.

(I feel better now ….)

Lol they don't want to wreck them!!
Sometime I the late 1960s I ran a wrecker call A Chevelle with a radical rake had to stop fast to avoid a child an XKE was tailgating him when he stopped his hood was under the Chevelle amazingly there was very little damage to either car, I got out of my wrecker and looked the situation over and the drive of the Jag was bitching at me telling if there was any more damage to his car he would sue, as I sat down in my wrecker to call for another wrecker so we could lift the Chevelle, he said what about my car, I told he he parked it like that get it out himself. after we got the Chevelle raised and the Jag out the driver wouldn't pay the bill, he ended up in jail and with a much larger Tow bill, we had to trailer his Jag.
