It's those darn ambulances that seem to be tailgating me. They honk and flash their lights at me and they always drive like are in a hurry to get somewhere. Well, as far as I'm concerned, the speed limit is the law, not just a good idea.šŸ˜œ

LOL, , according to the NTSB there is no reason for an Ambulance to be driven more that ten mph over the posted limit That was in 1990/91.
And really is the persons life in the ambulance any more important than everyone one else on the road?

I turn on my hazard flashers; generally they get the message, or think I am going to stop. They usually back off or go around. Used to drive a Mercury Grand Marqui (twin to a Crown Vic). Being a Ham I had antennas on it & Amber flashers on the back deck. If someone started to tailgate, I lit the flashers & they would back off in a hurry thinking it might be a police car.

As most of the ones I rode with said - the only time I wear a helmet is when it is wet, cold or too many bugs getting around my windscreen. I'm not going to be a vegetable for the rest of my life.

So it's a choice they make...

Just slow down gradually and pull to the right when you can. They should get the hint.

Just a tailgater with a different vehicle. He probably would do the same thing with a car.
They seem to be more obvious because they are larger?
Like seeing only the headlight from a semi in your side mirror...

My father-in-law would tailgate when he was driving his pickup but not while driving his car. I came to the conclusion that from his elevated position in the pickup he felt that he could judge the flow of the traffic sufficiently to justify tailgating. He may have felt comfortable but I was not.

Jerry, as the old saying goes, "size matters" and some people take this to heart and believe in the intimidation factor! We see the same thing here in Florida on a daily basis.

Naturally, I don't mean every pickup driver, but when I see one approaching in my rearview mirror, I tense-up because I know that in a few minutes, all I will see is the grill. It makes no difference how fast I am going. It's never fast enough. I'm not one of those old fogies who drives ten mph under the limit. With a speed limit of 55, I refuse to go over 60. We have four police departments here, and I see people stopped almost every time I drive into town.

When I get tailgated, my standard procedure is to check my speedo to make sure I'm driving over 55. I'll speed up to 59, if I'm not already there. If he's still on my bumper after a mile, or so, I'll take my foot off the gas and slow down to about 50. Sometimes, they take the hint and drift back. If not, I look for a place to pull off the road and let him pass.

I know what the first excuse is going to be: they're going to work, and time is money. "Going to work" is not a legal excuse to speed or tailgate. In most cases, they're going home, going shopping, or going to get a cup of coffee. Basically, they're stupid rednecks driving big trucks, and they think they have to right to do whatever they want.

I've had four pickups over the years, and I always drove like a normal person.

There. I said it.

Driven trucks for many years. Actually, when in my truck I feel I am more inclined to allow more space in front of meā€¦ and when pulling the 5th wheel trailer I know I allow even more space in front of meā€¦ from 21,000 to 23,000 pounds combined is not quick to stopā€¦ even though this truck has much enhanced brakes and the trailer has good brakes.

The truck does however spill over the parking space outlineā€¦ even in this one where the space is generous.

Sometimes, I do have small cars buzz around me and fit themselves between me and the car I had been followingā€¦ as I gently brake to allow space I sometimes wonder how much of an oily spot they will leave if I couldnā€™t stop in time.

If that bothers you, don't ever drive in Italy. Everyone tailgates there. When visiting there I finally turned the rearview mirror up because I was tired of seeing cars on my bumper. I was driving a rented high performance Skota and went well over the speed limit when not in villages. Didn't matter, they still road my bumper when they could have easily gone around me.

Well, in my neck of the woods, a majority of the full size pickup drivers seem to think they own the road, and drive like it's NASCAR country or something (It is).

The average speed on I-85 between Greensboro and Charlotte is around 78 MPH. The average guy in a Dodge RAM or Ford F-150 drives at 85 to 90 MPH. For some reason, the State Troopers don't seem to stop them. They stop the folks driving red sports cars and luxury cars.

I think these guys just like the whole testosterone-fueled, "Get outta my way, dude. Ahm Lemuel T. Ashhauler an' I gotta lot bigger one than you do" attitude.

Sorry, but pickup truck are the most common tailgaters. It's almost universal. When one follows at a reasonable distance, I keep looking in my mirror, wondering why he's so far back.

As I said, I've had this on my mind for a long time, but I thought maybe it was just me. When two other people recently mentioned it, I figured it was common enough that I could post it.

I completely disagree, pickup drivers are no worse than drivers of other vehicles, tailgaters are tailgaters no matter what they drive.

I installed a momentary contact switch that turns my tailights on when engaged. Only the stupidest drivers tailgate. If they rear end you they lose on all counts. I also have a dashcam with front and rear cameras for the court room if necessary.
