In my opinion there is only one true upgrade for you without going to fx cameras. That is the D500. It will use all of your lenses. It doesn’t have a built in flash but all you have to do is use an external flash.

I have both the 7200 and 500. I rarely use the 7200 anymore. I keep it as a backup.

Having had a d7200 I can saw it is a good camera. When I upgraded I went full frame with a d810. From there I ended up geting a d850. When I upgraded I wanted full frame hence the d810. I still fondly remember the d7200. Not knowing your needs or wants it's hard to make a suggestion.

IMHO:
I find this an interesting thread. It makes one think about “gas”. It seems “gas” is the antithesis of rationale. Thus, one frequently reacts without thinking all the pros and cons through.

Paul has done an enviable job of making one think of all the questions that need to be answered once past the “I want” stage. Answering these questions will cut down on buyers remorse for sure.

That being said, if a new purchase is what you want and you’re not going to miss a house payment because of it, then go for it. You can always list in the UHH For Sale section if it doesn’t work out.

I agree with Paul but even the low MP cameras were great. I have won many photo contest starting with my D70S 6MP and one hangs in my studio and still get compliments on it. I and have bought many other cameras, D3 12MP with over 580,000 clicks, D810 and now the D850 is my primary camera. I upgrade when I need to not because I just want to. I also have the D7200 that I bought for my 16 year old granddaughter, that I’m very impressed with it’s capabilities. (She lost interest quickly and the camera has less than 35 Clicks) Now saving it for my Grandson.

Paul, I am retired, I am a part of UHH, not reach by any means and still using my senses. It is not part of my lifestyle to recommend others who ask how to spend their money.

GAS is common and many times uncontrollable. My experience has been that if someone wants to buy something and asks here for advise that persons ends up buying what he or she wants regardless of the advice given. I repeat here what others have said in the past, one thing is I want and another is I need.

To the OP, as Paul mentioned you offer not enough information for advise. I have never owned a D7200 but everything I have heard about it has been very positive. What is the camera failing to do that you need in your photography? Portraits, action, wildlife and landscape I am sure are not weak areas for the D7200 from what I have seen so far. Perhaps you have in mind a mirrorless, perhaps a "full frame" camera. Consider selling what you have for bargain prices and spending perhaps more than you could afford in new lenses. If the quality of images concerns you be assured that a new camera will not change that.

Hello there Jack!! Welcome to Chg-Canon FanBoyz Club. We'll get you a members-only hat, next time we get them in stock. Is that going to be a small or extra-small, seems those always sell out the first....

Some of us have a special budget of savings just for the "I want" parts of our lives that does not in any way infringe on the other finance responsibilities, and at a time of life when, if we don't access the "gravy" now, we never will.
Others, who may be younger, would just like to ride the wave of new technology that invites the next level of artistic possibilities. Regardless of how great the D7200 is, can't blame anyone for being enticed by mirrorless, focus stacking, IBIS, and all the other amazing features that have been introduced and made reasonably affordable, since mid-2015 when the D7200 came out.

Wow... this is actually an interesting thread here!

My own 2 cents in this pony show: My D7100 is my lone DSLR body left after selling the other Nikon DSLR bodies. That said - it rarely sees exercise now.
My M4/3 cameras (3) see far more use - smaller and easy to have fun with. Image quality is fantastic for my work/art. The images blow up to 30" (!) with ease as did with my Nikon DSLRs (including my D7000, D5200 & D5100 bodies).

Is this a Downgrade? Not in my world!

JMODO of this subject, of course!!

He's brutally honest about the majority of members on UHH... i.e. aging children...

I shoot the Nikon D7200 on commercial gigs and although it has an "enthusiast" user interface the D7200's sensor remains at the top of Nikon's DX offerings... DxOmark rates it the best of the best.

With dual Card Slots it is very capable of commercial assignments...
And with the MB-D15 grip it is transformed into "Pro" ergonomics...
Endowed with Nikon's Expeed 4 processor it is now commanding higher prices on mpb over the Nikon D800 (Expeed 3)
In (like new) condition you'll pay over well over what mpb is asking for a D800 (in same condition).

Like Paul said, virtually no compelling reason to upgrade...
Unless you are primarily interested in BIF or Action Sports then the Nikon D500 is more germane...
The D7200 truly excels in Portraiture, Fashion, Lifestyle and Landscape..

Please enjoy your amazing D7200, and your photographic journey gdbrede

I'm with you Thomas902, and what Chg_Canon said.....it is just an excellent camera all around, really hard to beat as DSLR's go.

Alas, most of us define 'success' as buying a new camera.

Great responses GHG_CANON.... I have the Nikon D7000+ and consider it much smarter than this 82yo retiree ... so i plan to stay with it.

I had a D7200 I really liked, but it started to suffer problems that cost me $$ to send back to Nikon for repairs. I finally got to the point where I couldn't trust it anymore, and traded it in and upgraded to a D7500. Same lenses (a significant factor), faster processor, better ISO handling, slightly smaller and lighter, and the only thing I lost was a tiny bit of megapixels (21 vs 24) and max resolution. The improvements were a major plus for me, and I'm quite happy with the upgrade.

Here is an in-depth comparison of the two, if you're interested:

And if I might add; d7500 has the same sensor as the d500. I went with the d7500 cause I got a more affordable price for my budget than what the d500 was going for. Either one is a great camera imo. And both use dx lenses which some prefer for the reach.
