About 30% of the Main Photography Discussion has rather little to do with actual photography. So why are you picking on this one thread ? Its "just another thread" ... or isnt it ?

Are manufacturers extended warranty worth the additional cost? Just received an offer to extend the original warranty of my camera for two or three years. The extension for two years starts at the expiration of the original warranty, same for the three-year warranty. I already have coverage under my homeowners for loss, damage, theft, etc.

Comments, recommendations, greatly appreciated...CHEERS!

I personally haven't purchased an extended warranty.
The ONLY way that I would is if it were offered by the manufacturer and if there was only one page of a normal-sized font of plainly written coverage without exclusions.
In other words, it ain't gonna happen.

I have, over my 60 years in photography and using over 50 different camera's, never had one fail.
Forget the extended warranty, it is a waste of money.

The general recommendation is to avoid them. Manufacturers push them because they are money-makers. A friend bought one when he got a new car. When he tried to use it, "Sorry, but it doesn't cover that."

If you have credit cards check the benefits. Some cards offer extended warranties if you use their card for purchase. We have one such card.
Otherwise, I never buy extended warranties.

I would never extend the regular warranty but I have bought extended “drop/spill” warranties when it’s equipment I use in my kayak. And yes they ended up being a good investment.

Anything can fail but 2 to 3 years old is the period where a camera is least likely to fail. Cameras do tend to fail early due to manufacturing defect but they tend to happen early and then they fail because of wear and tear and old age which happen much later.

Thanks, I do have coverage under my homeowner's insurance and credit card....I agree, mechanical failure is the least likely to happen early on...Cheers.

Where would you suggest it be? And, if you personally don’t care about it, why read it? You should just skip it. After all, there are a LOT of other UHH’ers that might find it of interest.

If I hadn't, someone else would have. I'm not picking on the data or any elements or linkages within the data and the topic of the conversation is pretty straight forward. Just about any smart consumer knows that for the most part extended warranties are a waste of money. It's a form of gambling that the house usually wins almost all the time.
Like I said in my reply, I've bought dozens of digital cameras and lenses in the past 23 years, and not one of them has presented me with a warranty issue within the warranty or even extended warranty period. Are you sure about the 30% figure or are you just pulling a number out of your...
