Picasa does NOT store photos. Your photos are stored somewhere on a drive in your computer, for most a C or D drive. There are other drive options. I have a dedicated SSD for all my images.

I'm with Mark. Picasa is just an editor. I store my photos in RAW format on 2 external drives after extracting a JPG version to play with.

I lost most of my Picasa's when I switched to PSE18. I did have several that had been uploaded to Google Photos and, thank goodness, I had made DVD's and print albums and prints. I'm now becoming a backup bug, making flash drives, print albums, and Dropbox.

As has been said elsewhere, Picasa doesn't store photos. It's just an editor. Your photos are still on your hard drive where ever you put them originally.

You can add photos to Picasa by going to File->"Add Folder (or File) to Picasa"
There is also a File->Import

To add to the clarifications made by a couple of other folks:

1. Photos are not stored in Picasa...but if you edit a photo in Picasa and do not "save as" under another file name, you will lose the edits if you lose Picasa.

2. Adding files or folders to Picasa merely creates a shortcut to the original location. The location of any file on any computer is not inside software. They are on a hard drive or external drive or storage device.

Exporting the photo or groups of photos from Picasa also “locks in” the edits on the exported photos.

Good point; thank you! (and is probably the scenario with Bubbee and some she'd uploaded to another website)

Is Picasa still a working processor? I used it years ago, and I thought it was discontinued.

It's discontinued with no updates, but I still use mine almost every day since it's so simple. Probably another program out there as a basic replacement, but haven't looked.

You should NEVER post your email address here. Instead you should have sent it to Mark in a private message.

Or they were lost when the computer crashed. We don't know exactly what happens but it is likely the hard drive may have failed since it was replaced, and perhaps only some of the files from the older hard drive were recoverable. The OP does not appear to be a knowledgeable user and that, unfortunately, may mean there are no file backups.

This is such an important point, one that many people don't grasp. And it's true of all sorts of programs that catalog and edit music files, videos, documents, presentations, etc. I wonder how many people misuse Lightroom this way, putting in hours/years of work, only looking at their images in Lightroom, and never "exporting" their images to a usable format.
