I understand your concern and comment, [Bayou]. And I do not archive or print my photos in any format other than jpg, gif, png, or tiff (and to some extent RAW, but that is not a standard file format by any means.)
However, almost all commercial programs started out using (saving and editing files) in proprietary file formats. In fact, the gif format patents by Unisys and Compuserve expired only in 2004. Before then, software developers and users were supposed to pay for the privilege to use that format.
And the Microsoft Word document format *.doc has been released to the public and software creators only since 2007. Until then, projects such as OpenOffice had to develop their own formats for files in their own productivity software.
So, the safest things to do is to save aq simple photo viewer/editor with all photo file backups so that if some years from now, our grandchildren or historians want to access our photos, they will have a way to look at the files. --Richard

It is, but I am still using the last desktop model on a win10 machine, and seems to work well.
