I checked out several websites offering "free" release forms. They appear to be all the same; they're not really free, it requires a one time payment or a monthly fee. You're able to customize it which is nice but is this legit or are there forms out there that are free?

Without checking my "library of photo books" One titled---how to make money with your camera certainly has model releases and various bookkeeping helps and oher things. Certainly you don't have to pay for a model release. But you should check over photo books with explain the use of an implied or actual "filed" copyright. That is the important part anyway---what you own in the deal.----Eric

Check out ABE---used book search and buy books that sound like they are about the "business of photography" and you will get all the help you need and at a low price.----Eric

Thanks Paul. Before a shoot, I discuss clothing and poses with the models to make sure we are on the same page, which eliminates awkwardness or issues during the shoot. The only shoots I have turned down are when the model asked me to photograph her having intercourse. I also always ask the model if it would be okay for me to touch them to move an arm, etc., into position if they are unable to achieve to pose without help. To touch a model without permission is totally unacceptable.

Good luck with your projects.
Dan

Thanks Dan. I would love to shoot nudes one day but that is on the back burner for now due to a wife who doesn’t quite share my enthusiasm. Truth be told, she has her reasons due to my fall from grace 25 years ago.

Hope I’m not over sharing

I hesitate to mention again as I wrote about this technical concern earlier. I have received so much help from everybody.

My question is assuming the dance studio is lit by fluorescent light, do I adjust my white balance in camera accordingly or gel the flash head or both?

thanks again
Paul

This question is for any fellow Hoggers who have worked with models in a "trade for print" scenario.

I understand the concept but how is TFP actually accomplished? Do you provide a flash drive of pics the model has chosen or do you actually hand the model a set of prints?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you
Paul

Ask the model, then include it in your contact.

TFP, which means Trade For Print" is mean less today. It was used to signify an old method for working with a group to advance everyone's portfolio in the past.

Today it is really anything that you make an agreement with, when working with a model.

Thanks Tim, I kinda figured that was the case back in the good old days

I regularly shoot models both pro and amateur in my studio for fee and TFP. I agree with StarDust's work flow, but I do it a bit differently.

1) I meet with the model for a consult and discuss A) model release, B) outfits (usually a max of 3), C) length of shoot (usually 1 1/2-2 hrs), D) venue usually in my studio), E) tone and mood, F) level of explicitness, G) schedule. Also, she can bring a friend to the shoot (or consult), but I discourage someone she is romantically involved with because they tend to inhibit the model.

2) My model release is very specific and states that I retain ALL rights to the images (unless I am paid by the model, then they retain all rights). It also states the process involved (below).

3) After the shoot, in LightRoom, I edit the photos down to 25 (jpegs) based on my discretion; I usually do some basic post, like cropping and color balance. The remainder of the photos I delete.

3) I post those 25 photos on my website (SmugMug) with a p/w for the model to view them, and send her an email with the link. The model can download any or all.

4) The model emails me the frame numbers of which 5 she likes best. On the RAW version of those I do detailed post such as skin smoothing. These I save as large-format jpegs and re-post on a separate "Select" folder inside their main folder from where they can download.

5) A few times I have put images on a flash drive without detailed post, but I never let a photo go out that has mistakes like isn't focused well, is lit incorrectly, or the model looks bad.

I hope this gives you some ideas.

this style, and have no issues with your pics, i'm just surprised that it's allowed on MM. Paul
MM is a "closed" system for Photographers to post so they verify you are legit, plus one can choose to filter out the nude photos when viewing. Yeah for Freedom of choice versus nanny censors. Wishing you success at an age that you can "get out of your old self" because you don't need to impress anyone but yourself.

well, I am very different then dat2ra ( not meaning anything by it, just two opinions )
I get it correct in the camera and shoot only JPG just short of rapid fire ( I actually actuate each shot )
and then I give them what I captured in full JPG. it is not my job to correct their imperfections ( when I dont get paid ) .

I have 13 + years of shooting video and editing so for past 10 years, I refuse to do 'home work'
I never edit photos, I may crop the studio out of the background when I shot too wide, but thats it.

:-)

dat2ra,

VERY helpful. my first potential dancer is very young (tween) so my main focus will be on her safety and assuring her parents that i'm on the level. My close friend will help getting my foot in the door with will help enormously

Stardust, thanks very much for your post. I didn't at all mean to imply that i'm a "nanny censor". If you and your model are cool with doing explicit work together, that's great! But right now, that doesn't interest me.

The fact that i've even gotten this far (actively looking for potential dancers, looking into studio rental fees, etc) speaks volumes (to me) regarding finally getting out of my own head and picking up my camera instead of beating myself up for not using it!

best
Paul

Another very useful post. Thank you for that. I'm trying hard not to overthink my first shoot with a ballet dancer (i'm really good at overthinking and obsessing over stuff) but everybody who has posted so far is keeping me on point and balanced (if that makes any sense?) which will then keep me from going off the reails

thank you!!
Paul
