At my age, stabilization is my primary, and perhaps sole, reason to consider the XT5.
On that note, why not the XT4 ?
Would save some sheckels.

I was just getting ready to send another comment stating that the XT4 would be less expensive and would accomplish my objective and avoid 40mp.

40MP is only about 25% more rez vs 26MP so why pay more ?
We are all (?) glad for progress but progress is incremental. The price of stepping up by just one most recent increment is usually no bargain.
If you were upgrading from 16 or 20
then go all the way, go for the 40MP, intending to sit out the next upgrade.
The 5 is supposed to have a few enhancements other than higher rez, such as better focusing than the 4. I am simply an amateur and probably wouldn’t notice the difference.
Is 60 MB even noticeable to an amateur?

It seems like 40 should be noticeably more detailed than 26, but some experts say the difference is barely noticeable.
Another concern — how will my current lenses perform with more rez?

Youve been here long enough to know it depends on which amateur(s) you mean.
As always, I recommend you rent one to see how you like it and if you might use the features it offers.
I think I agree, but with my wildlife photos, I crop so heavily that I think I want the extra resolution. I only hope it doesn’t bog down my computer too much. I may stitch a few images together and see how my laptop handles the extra load.
