For future photo shoots, download the images using Nikon Transfer (free and part of Nikon NX Studio). I use Downloader pro to do essentially the same thing.

With both programs you can create file folder names and file names that relate to the photo shoot.

I do not know if either program allows you to rename images after they have been downloaded.

If you are using a Windows PC...

Faststone Photo Resizer can be set up to copy your image file name into a "watermark" it puts in the image.

Be careful to NOT do this to your original files... only to copies! You might need to size them smaller, too, which is the original purpose of Photo Resizer. But it's able to do a lot of things and does them as a batch.

Being FREE, Faststone doesn't come with instructions. But it's pretty intuitive to use. In one panel you look at a list of the files in a folder and can highlight the ones you want the software to "process". It can do one file or a thousand files. However many you select, it will batch process pretty rapidly. I used to use it to put watermarks on images (not file names, but a specific watermark I'd created in other software). Worked great for that, but once Adobe put a similar feature in Lightroom I no longer needed to do the separate step in Faststone. But I keep it installed for other possible uses.

P.S. Lightroom can do this too, by the way. If you have it installed.

How to place the file name on the photo in bulk where you can see the photo and the file name. This weekend alone I shot over 4,500 pics of football. With my Z9s at 20fps I get the shots but with so much not so good and right now I don't have a lot of time to weed out the junk. I put the photos in MP4 video and they give me the time stamp where they see the photos they would like. They like the video because it take less time to view the photos but it still takes me time to find the photos. If the photo had the file name on it then they could just give me the file name.

Most software programs have file renaming abilities. If you are using Adobe Bridge or Lightroom, you can batch rename your files easily. If you use Lightroom Classic then you will first have to load them into LR. If you use Bridge then you can just batch rename the files on your hard drive. Either way you can customize the file names.

I missed that detail. It seems that Hip Coyte answered the question. As noted by some others, make sure not change the original files if using the program.

Faststone image viewer does batch renaming. Cost is free but give the author a few bucks if you find it helpful.

I LOVE IrfanView!
It is well maintained and I find it to be the Swiss Army Knife of Photo Programs.
It will convert an incredible number of file formats.

I can't help with your question, but wanted to let you know that despite what others may say, it did not bother me one iota that you put your title in all caps.

(1) Always save the original.
(2) Always back up the original.
(3) Always back up the backup.

Original
Backup 1
Backup 2

You can bicycle the 2 Backups.
Another off-site or Cloud Backup is ALSO advisable.

I use a Mac, and I use Graphicconverter for bulk processing to add tags to the image. It can set the size of the text to a percentage of the image so it scales with different image sizes (useful if you crop a lot). It can set the location, font color, and add a background rectangle with contrasting color and rounded corners so the text can be seen easily. It can bulk process thousands of images.

When I'm processing sport competitions, I tag images in Lightroom by putting competitor numbers in the caption field as I am processing. When done, I use Lightroom to add the competitor name to the caption for all of the same competitor numbers, and then use Lightroom to rename the files using the event date, name, caption, and sequence number. Resulting files sort by competitor, which can then be collected into individual folders for delivery.

I usually don't tag deliverables, but for slide shows it works well to add such tags so people know who is being shown.

I've used Irfanview to do that job for a long time, has never let me down. Plus, it's freeware, so the price is right. go to https://www.irfanview.com/ for more info. The batch processing module is in the File dropdown.

Good recommendation, does exactly what was wanted, small program size, simple to use and FREE !

Did grumpybear ever get back to us on what he decided to choose. I would never have need for this. I have to put the number plate numbers on my files, so I have to touch each file. Yuck, none of this stuff works in batch mode for me.

But it would be good to know if any of the freeware stuff worked.
