Did grumpybear ever get back to us on what he decided to choose. I would never have need for this. I have to put the number plate numbers on my files, so I have to touch each file. Yuck, none of this stuff works in batch mode for me.

But it would be good to know if any of the freeware stuff worked.

As recommended by 'markeye', IrfranView freeware does the job required.

If you are using a Windows PC...

Faststone Photo Resizer can be set up to copy your image file name into a "watermark" it puts in the image.

Be careful to NOT do this to your original files... only to copies! You might need to size them smaller, too, which is the original purpose of Photo Resizer. But it's able to do a lot of things and does them as a batch.

Being FREE, Faststone doesn't come with instructions. But it's pretty intuitive to use. In one panel you look at a list of the files in a folder and can highlight the ones you want the software to "process". It can do one file or a thousand files. However many you select, it will batch process pretty rapidly. I used to use it to put watermarks on images (not file names, but a specific watermark I'd created in other software). Worked great for that, but once Adobe put a similar feature in Lightroom I no longer needed to do the separate step in Faststone. But I keep it installed for other possible uses.

P.S. Lightroom can do this too, by the way. If you have it installed.

I use it all the time and like it so much I sent a donation.
The Tools tab includes 'batch convert selected images'. Select you images then open batch convert selected images.
You will get a few options, select Advanced Option and Text.
You can place the text (this is mine 'Copyright Martin Coull - ($C2) - ($D1)' ) there are plenty of options just download and try.
IMPORTANT only for Windows - they expressed no interest in either MacOS or Linux even though they appear to use mainly open source routines.

Good recommendation, does exactly what was wanted, small program size, simple to use and FREE !

I'm glad it worked for you. I use it to both reduce the filesize and rename the result, keeping the source files in their original folders and adding a "/small/" sub-folder to which I send the shrunk & renamed images. i need the smaller files to attach to emails.. been doing this for decades with nary a hiccup. I also use it to insert little arrows, draw circles, add text to images when required... someone called it a "Swiss army knife" for imaging and they're right on.

Most software programs have file renaming abilities. If you are using Adobe Bridge or Lightroom, you can batch rename your files easily. If you use Lightroom Classic then you will first have to load them into LR. If you use Bridge then you can just batch rename the files on your hard drive. Either way you can customize the file names.

He wants to add the file name to the photo as like a watermark.

How to place the file name on the photo in bulk where you can see the photo and the file name. This weekend alone I shot over 4,500 pics of football. With my Z9s at 20fps I get the shots but with so much not so good and right now I don't have a lot of time to weed out the junk. I put the photos in MP4 video and they give me the time stamp where they see the photos they would like. They like the video because it take less time to view the photos but it still takes me time to find the photos. If the photo had the file name on it then they could just give me the file name.

with that many photos, I hope you are using a program for culling and editing. If so, I hope it is Light Room Classic. It is so easy to do in this program. If you do not use Lightroom, then this might help someone else. Good luck. This is fast and simple!!

Basically, you select all the photos you want and then use the slideshow module. Follow the instructions in the link I am sending you. I just did it and it works great....when you select export jpg slide show it creates a folder with all the photos in it. You then view it with any viewer. It is not a slideshow. This is used by some pros to send proofs to clients, then they know the file names to order, or ???

ACDSee, It won't place them on the photo but it will put them on the file when you open them up. Type a header name and XXXXX for a number from 00001 the last number to 99999.
