When Prince Wilhelm got married in Amsterdam we decided to go.
My wife and I had been there many times already, and had a guy we used for a room in the Opera Building complex...it's all connected by a central green area...encircled...private.

Anyways...big day...lots of good times...saw the English monarchy on full display up pretty dang close...neat.

We were bushed and headed back to our little hideaway. Our B&B room was huge and had a hot tub next to the balcony...so we jumped in with a bottle of wine and just relaxed with the curtains wide open...no one around...very quiet...everyone was out still partying.

So there was an opera that night and the house was opposite us...the huge expanse of curtains opened up on the second floor balcony and there was the Royal family...milling about...looking over the central green space.

There was the Queen...shorter than I imagined....everyone dressed to the nines. We had our own little show going on for a minute or two.

Then security noticed us...no big deal...but they ushered everyone back and started to close the curtains...we waved as the curtains closed...the queen waved back.

Neat little random moment you can't see coming.

She was the world's queen. Such grace. It is truly the end of an era. Things will be different.

I have many images, in my files, of the Queen havig covered many Royal visits and otere such occasions. This is my favourite image of her because of the warm way she always related to children.

I agree with both you and your wife. Charles should abdicate to William and just stay in the background; unfortunately, he is too narcissistic to do the right thing.

Rest in peace, dear Elizabeth, you will be missed more than you could know.

Actually…they should both abdicate to Harry…although that might not be quite legal as I’m not British. Harry seems much more personable and relatable than either of those two…at least from the far side of the pond. The queen was…publicly anyway…non political but I’ve read that she ruled the family with an iron fist behind the scenes…and while I’m aware of no actual proof Megan’s statements about racism seem almost certainly to have some basis behind them…and I would give Harry and she credit from stepping back from the Firm over it…because they both k ow the truth even if they aren’t sharing it. Cutting your family mostly off isn’t done lightly…and while I’m not British their upper crust is very much like the upper crust over here on the other side of the pond.

My wife and I shared our doubts about Charles to some British folks we met on a cruise. They said that he is liked by the British public much more than Americans think. I've read several books about Elizabeth, her sister, and the family. I now have more faith that Charles will keep up the strong sense of duty that his mother instilled in the family. They are a symbol, something that we Americans lack, and perhaps do not understand totally. The fact that they completed Brexit showed me that there is strength in the UK. that we have to learn to appreciate.

She was a revered symbol of grace and civility who will be missed dearly by the Brits.

I have to say, in all my 67 years, despite lots of world history and humanities courses, I've never really understood the fascination with royalty. What purpose do they serve *in 2022*? What actual role does the monarch perform now? It's not like there is a British Empire to rule. The days of imperialism are long gone.

Having a ceremonial head of state who has little or no role in governance decisions has some advantages, which is why countries like Italy and Israel have one.

I wish King Charles III success in his new role. I was somewhat surprised he chose to keep that name given the history of his predecessors. (Bookies in London were quoting odds as late as last week that he'd call himself George VII.)

Even though Elizabeth II wasn't MY queen, she was THE queen! Rest in peace, your majesty. You've earned it.

My father was a NYC Detective and in NYC only NYC PD was allowed to guard dignitaries. When she came to the USA many years ago, my Dad was her personal security and he spoke at length with her. He said she was a very wonderful person and he never forgot her for how nice and unassuming she was.

Someone from Britain would need to substantiate this, but I heard that the King or Queen does have some sayso in their government. Don’t know; just heard this on a news program.

Very sad. She was not just a queen, not just a woman, but a true LADY at all times.

Our Queen was one of the most loved women that ever lived, she was so regal but also put everyone at ease as if you were the only person in the room, she will be sorely missed
