I have Canon, Fuji, Nikon and Sony cameras for many years, all perform to their design specifications, and none of them suck....I wish other products worked as well....Personal preferences aside, I think all the camera mfg's do a good job.....and I really don't care who is numero uno sales wise....it's great we have choices!!

The Japanese really love their Olympus cameras and are fearlessly loyal to the brand, now OM.

Cheers

That's right...the only market propping up OLY is Japan.

That'll change.

With the camera market so rapidly shrinking, it is always good to know your brand is doing well and may still be around in the future for you with parts and service.

It has nothing to do with any self worth for me , just a practical consideration.

But you are right, many UHHers so closely identify with their chosen brands they cant separate themselves from the brand and even put their brand name in their member names, LOL

Cheers and best to you.

Yes your outlook is rational. Acoarst you know what happens every time you launch one of these threads, therefor I unapologetically call it trolling. Protest, if you wish, that its not your intent but youve repeatedly seen the result.

Its interesting to me that you mention members whose ID includes their camera brand. Ive always noticed that and therefor "discounted" all their remarks.

Theres also a few IDs that incorporate automotive names (Mustang, etc) and Im likewise wary of their stuff cuz theyre associating their material goods with their identity. Clearly my own user ID shuns that sort of thing. I just cant identify with some corporate entity :-(

Canon and Nikon are not reaping what they did not sow in time... The visionaries in the pro community were adopting mirrorless as early as 2012 and nagging the majors to get onboard. Sony figured it out and jumped in the water with Panasonic and Olympus. Fujifilm jumped in before Canon and Nikon, too. Pentax was shoved aside. Leica partnered with Panasonic and hung in there. What a long strange trip it's been!

It is a competitive market, and things will shift around a bit. Most of the brands of the 1960s are either still with us, merged with other brands, or in rare cases, died off. Sony purchased the merged Konica-Minolta camera division. Ricoh bought Pentax. OMD bought Olympus...

We will see various brands rise and fall, and there will be more changes due to the ever increasing volume and pervasiveness of smartphones. There will probably be some fallout due to geopolitical instability. All we know is, this is what happened in the last measured period... same as any economic data! Past performance is not a guarantee of future results...

I never write off anyone. Think back to 1997 and what was happening at Apple, and look where they are now. They went from within 90 days of bankruptcy to a $2.66 Trillion market capitalization (today). I don't expect to hear that sort of story happening with Pentax, or even Nikon, but who knows?

More likely, an outside company will develop the Next Big Thing to replace photography as we know it with, what, holography? Who knows...

I always appreciate your objective, thoughtful and knowledgeable replies Burk.

When I posted this thread and asked what people thought, I was sure many folks would reveal their mindsets and attitudes in their replies and they haven't disappointed me . Some replies were totally predictable from past commenting on a variety of subjects here in UHH. .

Burk, yours are always quite refreshing.

Cheers and best to all you UHHers

Ya gotta love the enthusiasm of the group as a whole! Looking at the chart, I would not buy stock in any of the companies. However, most would agree that Japan is a harbinger of camera use, and we all know that Sony is the fastest selling brand of mirrorless over the past maybe ten years. So as a Sony and Olympus owner, I am feeling pretty good. But the future is owned by those who grab it, and our needs for equipment have to be met on a timely basis. Ya gotta love competition!

I'm not buying because of any charts, but of all of the cameras that I've owned over the years and I've owned at least one of each, I've settled on a Canon R6, a Sony RX10 MKIV and a Sony A6000. I've settled on these cameras for their quality and ease of use. But, hmm, the top two. Cool.

I saw that car 30 or 40 years ago. Didn't it belong to Carole Lombard or Gary Cooper? It was some famous movie star.

It's easy to pooh pooh this as "who cares, I already have a camera" but market share is very important to corporations. As market share shrinks companies have to evaluate whether to stay in that market or not. As more and more companies leave a particular market, choice for the consumer dwindles and products slow their advancement. Face it, most of us are old fogeys that probably aren't in the market for a new camera. When I buy something now I say it comes with a lifetime warranty. But for the younger generation they just may not have the choices we've enjoyed all our lives. Remember when we could choose from dozens of different types and brands of film?
