It's easy to pooh pooh this as "who cares, I already have a camera" but market share is very important to corporations. As market share shrinks companies have to evaluate whether to stay in that market or not. As more and more companies leave a particular market, choice for the consumer dwindles and products slow their advancement. Face it, most of us are old fogeys that probably aren't in the market for a new camera. When I buy something now I say it comes with a lifetime warranty. But for the younger generation they just may not have the choices we've enjoyed all our lives. Remember when we could choose from dozens of different types and brands of film?

There are plenty of film stocks still available at the major MAJOR camera stores online.

Choices we retirees made 40 years ago are probably so totally irrelevant to our kids as to be laughable. My 23-year-old twins saw me digitizing film negatives and slides for my college reunion slide show and gave me that, "How did you ever put up with that nonsense?" look.

Markets come and go, but change is a constant forever. Enjoy what you have that works for you now. Embrace something new while you still can.

Ya gotta love the enthusiasm of the group as a whole! Looking at the chart, I would not buy stock in any of the companies. However, most would agree that Japan is a harbinger of camera use, and we all know that Sony is the fastest selling brand of mirrorless over the past maybe ten years. So as a Sony and Olympus owner, I am feeling pretty good. But the future is owned by those who grab it, and our needs for equipment have to be met on a timely basis. Ya gotta love competition!

Key operator: market share is very important to corporations.

I are not a corporation, and I really don't care who's on first.

It's not "I really don't care" on third, it's "I don't know" on third and of course you're right with "who's on first". What?...no he's on second...

I couldn't resist.

You missed the point. As more and more companies leave the business you will be left with less choices for cameras.

And then there's this. 10 1/4" hand span, size 14 1/2 wedding band. That ring won't pass the first knuckle on 6 of my fingers or even start on my thumbs. I've held the mirrorless cameras of all that are listed. I'll never own one. To small for me to feel comfortable with, or operate. I'll stick with my big fat, clunky D7200, D500, and D810, each with a grip so I can have them firmly in hand. They take great pics, even with a mirror.

Not surprising. If I was shooting professionally and making $100K gross per year or more, I would be probably be shooting Sony or possibly Canon. But I am not shooting professionally and I am not grossing more than $100K per year. Why should I require extra size, extra weight, and extra cost when I will not recover any of it? I still have the quality I want and the ability to print 30X40 with 4/3rds. Not a surprise that Olympus is third place. And like Bill at Burkphoto indicates, who really knows what the future really will be.

And the choices will be in response to demand for those choices... Is that not the way it is supposed to work, regardless of our personal desires ? And guess where the overall market demand will be ... I would venture it will not be for so called " Real cameras ".

Halfbaked .... or less. If you need a new camera there are a number of really huge new models, but they do sit high on the food chain. Big cameras are big money. But same is true of shoes, cars, houses.

No matter the market share I still love Studebakers!!

Brings back memories. I remember a family I knew while in High School in the 60's that all of them drove Studebaker Lark's.

This practice must have been hard to maintain as time went on!
