Canon and Nikon are not reaping what they did not sow in time... The visionaries in the pro community were adopting mirrorless as early as 2012 and nagging the majors to get onboard. Sony figured it out and jumped in the water with Panasonic and Olympus. Fujifilm jumped in before Canon and Nikon, too. Pentax was shoved aside. Leica partnered with Panasonic and hung in there. What a long strange trip it's been!
It is a competitive market, and things will shift around a bit. Most of the brands of the 1960s are either still with us, merged with other brands, or in rare cases, died off. Sony purchased the merged Konica-Minolta camera division. Ricoh bought Pentax. OMD bought Olympus...
We will see various brands rise and fall, and there will be more changes due to the ever increasing volume and pervasiveness of smartphones. There will probably be some fallout due to geopolitical instability. All we know is, this is what happened in the last measured period... same as any economic data! Past performance is not a guarantee of future results...
I never write off anyone. Think back to 1997 and what was happening at Apple, and look where they are now. They went from within 90 days of bankruptcy to a $2.66 Trillion market capitalization (today). I don't expect to hear that sort of story happening with Pentax, or even Nikon, but who knows?
More likely, an outside company will develop the Next Big Thing to replace photography as we know it with, what, holography? Who knows...
