I fell with my camera and the UV Filter was the only casualty. However, it jumped the thread in the area it hit the metal bleacher.
I've tried lots of stuff to no avail. The rubber can opener, channel locks, rubber band. Anyone had any luck getting the metal threaded ring off once it jumped a thread? The filter was completely shattered, so it is just the ring. I've thought of several things, but they all involve ruining the threads on the lens, which I'm trying to avoid. All ideas are welcome. Thx in advance

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to repair the lens for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message.

For Rick, he has done work for me in the past!

Fasten a zip tie around the filter ring and pull it tight. This applies equal pressure to the filter.

I had the same issue, but not from being dropped. I tried a number of the solutions mentioned below, & ended up placing the lens in my freezer for about 50 minutes, and it came off without an issue. Worried about possible internal condensation, I took the lens & placed in in a sunroom for 2 days....Still works fine

I got one stuck once. Only option was to send to Nikon for repair. About $600. The camera and lens came back looking brand new.

Best of luck,
Mike

Sorry, I misread. Thought your issue was between lens and body. Disregard.

I've had a similar situation... use a filter wrench. Works like a charm. They are available at your favorite camera store most likely... Igot mine at B&H.

Be careful not to strip the threads on your lens. If you have crossed the threads and force it to unscrew, you may cause further damage to the lens.

I strongly suggest not using a Drexel tool or saw to cut the ring. Too much risk of debris getting into places it shouldn’t be. In the case that you describe, when “unscrewing” the filter won’t work, forcing it is a poor idea as someone above mentioned since there is risk of damaging the lens thread. The simplest solution in a case where the filter is already ruined is to use a small pair of metal snips to cut the ring and just unwind it from the lens. That is what most repair shops do - I learned this first hand when I dropped my Zeiss 100/2 and brought it over to Zeiss which was in the building next to my office.

Walmart has one for $5

I’ve previously had good results by heating a soft, cotton cloth ‘dish towel in the microwave until it’s quite warm, even hot, to the touch. Then, quickly wrap and squeeze the hot towel tightly around the metal filter (Only the filter; try to avoid the body/end of 5he lens) for a few seconds. The idea is that the heat wil cause the metal ring to expand slightly. After holding for a short time, try to slowly twist it off. If doesn’t work first time, immediately try again without letting the ring cool down.
Worked for me. Of course, no guarantees. Good luck.

Take it to a local machinist. It will take him about three minutes. Because he has the right kind of tools. Good luck.

Had this issue once with a lens from my old Canon FTb. I couldn't get the filter ring off no matter what I tried. I finally very carefully clamped the filter in a vise, making sure that only the filter ring was within the jaws. Then I tightened the vise. This crushed the filter ring inward away from the lens threads. Then I rotated the lens about 90 degrees and crushed the filter ring again. This distorted the ring enough that it just fell out. No damage to the lens threads, as it just pulled the ring straight inward away from the threads.

A lens filter wrench may work. See below:

In addition to the filter being destroyed, a lens element may have become misaligned when the filter got broken. I definitely think it needs to go to an experienced repair person or to Nikon.

Wow, some of you guys are scary. If it is an expensive lens I would check with a local camera shop if there is one available. At least show it to them and ask for advise. Good luck! Course, you could always try and drop it again on the edge of the ring . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . just kidding, but you never know!

Just out curiosity, where are you going to find a local camera store? 😄.

The guy at Walmart or Best Buy won’t even know what a filter is.

I said if there is one available, or try google for one. They are still around.
