I buy pretty much all of my electronics from a company called "Backmarket". Everything they sell is refurbished, and comes with a 30 day return policy, and a 12 month warranty. A lot of their stuff is ex-store display models or as previously mentioned, "open box", or maybe missing the manual etc, and can't be sold "as new". Having said that, my phone (that I'm using right now), had a new store price of around $1200.00. This one cost me $450.00 and when I received it, no original box or charger, it honestly looked and worked like a brand new, straight from the factory phone, and the free shipping took 3 days! Not a scratch on it, and I couldn't be happier! I've also bought a Samsung flat screen smart TV, (tiny scratch on the side, not the screen, and you have to be closer than 12 inches to see it), no original box, Samsung smart watch, and galaxy ear buds, and everything with the 12 month warranty, and unbeatable prices my next purchase is going to be a new laptop. Oh by the way, they also sell cameras and lenses. You need to keep checking their stock because it's constantly changing. So anyway, there really are some genuine bargains out there if you know where to look. There's quite a few "companies" that claim to be just like the one I've mentioned, but a lot of them are not at all legit! And you have to be careful and do some research before you part with any money. I'm very happy and impressed with the place I use, and can't imagine paying full price anywhere else, (unless it's for a specific item that they don't have! And their customer service is also excellent! I'm sure there's other places out there just like this one, but I haven't found any although I'd like to. So sorry for dragging this out for so long, just wanted to share something with you guys that some of you might be interested in. Hope you all have a wonderful day!

If you can not walk into the store to view (or return) the product, it is not worth the risk.

Tamron, and Tamron only, can work on their lenses and they won't repair gray market equipment at all. They don't sell parts to repair shops either so you have to use their repair facility. If theirr is a question about the validity of the offer then buy the lens from an authorized seller. You'll be glad you did in the long run. It's going to need service at some point.

There well could be a number of reasons for the lower price, but I very much doubt that any of the major manufacturers would risk their good name by allowing out "second quality" branded product! Too easy to get a (though even unwarranted) bad reputation.

I doubt there is a grey market Tamron lens in Austrailia. What I would check to see is if the cheaper lens is an older version of the more expensive lens.

Of course you should go online and check reviews of the retailer.

Manufacturers do not sell sub standard equipment. They will ruin it through the line to be fixed and sold as refurbished. This may be what you are seeing. They should advertise it as refurbished. If not, run.

Ask the seller for a Photograph of the lenses serial no. and than check with Tamron US if it’s genuine.

Australia may be different, but I am in the same boat as you...retiree, needing to be careful with my expenditures. I have bought two Nikon refurbished cameras from a reputable U.S. dealer.
Canon refurbished equipment has a full warranty? WOW!
Iirc, Nikon's refurbished warrranty is for like 60 days. However, I have never had a problem with my refurbished Nikons. (yet!)
Some dealers in used equipment give 180 day to 1 year warranties.
