As a US retiree in similar circumstances, I'd say this trick if for folks who can afford to lose the $850. If this was a horse race, would you bet $850 to "save" $300 (round numbers). Not me. I didn't even have $20 on the Kentucky Derby...............................

Perhaps a Used from a reputable vendor or refurb from a reputable vendor or the manufacturer. But this deal as presented has too many loose strings to sound safe to me. It is ALL in how good the vendor is---. If you haven't ever heard of them, there's not much reputation for them to lose---versus your $850!

I don’t see evidence of loose strings. As others have said, check the reputation of the seller. If it’s “Abe’s of Canberra” run the other way.

Just curious - are there 2nds in the photographic world? Maybe not grey market but cameras/lenses which do not meet the manufacturers stringent quality standards and are sold off cheaply.
I ask as I'm looking to buy a Tamron lens here in Australia and find 5 out of 6 retailers price is A$1200+ with the 6th selling supposedly the same lens at more than 20% discount - A$850. The retailer insists its genuine Australian stock with full warranty and offers 14 day return if not satisfied. As a retiree that saving is very attractive but I'm concerned I may be buying a substandard product. I don't want to have to try out their 14 day return policy if I do get a poorer quality lens.
Does anyone know if this is a possibility - substandard goods being sold off cheaply?

Consumer protection laws in Australia are very strongly in favour of the purchaser. I think you will be safe.

14 days is not adequate for a return. They may count from the day you order until the day it arrives back, hoping to catch you on a technicality.

Why not simply ask the retailer how he/she manages to have such great prices?

This is the only proper answer to your question. I bought my first digital camera (major brand) new in the box for about half price. It was a US model and came with all accessories and paperwork. That camera is still being used today, about 15 years later. It was a closeout...the last stock of a model that had been discontinued. Of course, after I got it and began using it, I understood the pricing a little better. While the camera was completely serviceable and captured beautiful images, it was as slow as molasses to use...far from competitive with its replacement.

Am I glad I bought it? Yes. It was an excellent way to get into digital photography without risking two or three times the money for something that might not have been as interesting as I thought. But I have long since replaced it with a camera that is much more usable.

Just be sure what you are getting. If it is legitimately offered, just make sure what limitations it may be imposing on you.

Look for refurbished product from the manufacturer. I sometimes buy Canon products that are reconditioned and I save about 20% and it's virtually new with warranty...

Generally not advertized but sometimes dealer will sell demo unit for a good price. I bought the Nikon 20mm f/2.8 AF-D for $256 and it was a store display. I came with full 5 years warranty and Nikon did fixed for free 4 years after I owned it for the diaphram problem.

The best deals out there are factory refurbished. For the last ten years all my Canon equipment has been factory refurbished. Ten years ago the service tech that repaired the cable on my 24-105 lens explained to me what the term means and what it includes. Factory refurbished may be any item that is brand new and came back from the store because they lost the manual for example. Canon cannot just repack and sell as new, since the item has been out of the box. Before it can be sold, every function of the item has to be checked by a technician and certified. I had nothing but excellent results with the items I purchased over the past years including the Canon R5 purchased 6 month ago.

Here is another thought. If you pay for the item with a credit card, you get consumer protection from the card company. Anyone gone this route?

Common sense tells me that if I ask Abe’s if Maine how their prices can be so low I don’t think they’re gonna tell me the truth.

I have this bridge I can sell you for rock-bottom prices. Just ask and I’ll give you an honest answer to how I can sell it so cheap!
