The camera in your smart phone is a REAL CAMERA, just as much as a DSLR, MILC, ETC. are real cameras, they're just not dedicated cameras.
You realize there is a difference of opinion to that on the Hog. We have members who only consider a "real Camera" to be one that shoots 8x10" film. I have actually do have two 4x5" film cameras in addition to 35mm film and APS-C DSLRs. I may if I live long enough eventually get a FF and/or MILC. I guess I draw the line of "real" being having an
optically focusable lens.
I am definitely not a futurist. I still prefer CDs and LPs to Streaming music, though I have a lot of mp3, FLAC, Wav digital file music on my PC and External archive drives. To each his own. And if you look closely at my other posting over the last several years you would know that I have written favorably about SmartPhones. Of course they have their place. I was more or less making a point to this particular OP and his massive list of questions.
Peace!

A comment by dpullum in an unrelated post on 4/30 led me to think about cellphone cameras.
It is clear that Apple, Samsung, and Alphabet all produce ‘phones with cameras that are amazing by any standard. I’m currently using a Samsung Galaxy S21, but I have no reason to think it’s either better nor worse than other brands of the same age.
However, I’m curious about the relative abilities of all current iterations of the different brands available.
What abilities should be reviewed (there are certainly others that I can’t think of at this moment)?
1. IQ of images at wide, standard, and long lens settings.
Subset: accuracy of focus and controllability of depth of field.
2. Ability at handling a wide variety of light levels.
3. Ability to handle scenes requiring a wide dynamic range.
4. Range of focal lengths of imbedded lenses.
5. Color bias, if any.
6. Image stabilization?
7. Ability to control artificial lighting.
8. Ability to back up images on the go.
9. Storage capacity.
10. Output formats available.
11. IQ of video as well as stills.
12. Ease of use handling the camera, and complexity of menu(s).
13. Careful review of post-processing abilities.
14. Anything else you might think of.
Note that comments like “I use XYZ cellphone camera and it is…….” Are not helpful for comparison purposes.
Does a review including most of the above criteria exist?

When I make up my yearly photo book, I use a lot of images sent over the phone by my children.
For my photo shows I use my Nikon and Sony camera's shooting RAW.

No matter what phone I recommend, within 6 months it will be obsolete. There is so quick a change due to the advancement of the technology. A better thought is what is available in apps for camera shooting.
Yup. I just replaced my 9 year old S-III with an S21.
Might be last year's model, but a year after I got the S-III it was last year's model........

I know there are excellent images taken with cell phone cameras….I’ve seen them. However, I can’t seem to get a decent image with my iPhone X max, or any of the previous iPhones I’ve owned. I trust my real cameras for my mediocre images. 🤭

Why?
Not a general photography discussion?
So discussion about printers should be in the "Printer Section"; Nikon discussion should be in the "Nikon Section"; ...?
Completely agree with you "Mr Long"! Too many "specific sections" popping up. I enjoy reading through "general photography" and seeing a variety of topics. Plowing through a bunch of different sections just to pass the time would be tedious for me, I also enjoy the "chit chat" for the same reason. If every camera brand, accessory and topic is put in it's own little box, I suspect most of us will never get to see it or even think of looking for it. Oh , and by the way, I've had several of my posts "moved" by admin, because according to "them", they didn't quite fit in the box where they were posted (they did), sometimes they did this halfway during a conversation where neither person could find the thread any more. Most annoying. Why not just let us post? We all understand how to read.

Since this is the “general” section where all things about photography and all brands are discussed, I think it’s appropriate to include general questions about cell phone cameras here.

Actually, I try to buy last years technology because it is MUCH cheaper. Best is buying used, just like buying used cars.

That's another reason I went with the S21 instead of the S22. I didn't even ask the S22 price.
My S-III was the last of the freebee upgrades, it cost nothing, just the accessories (car charger and Otter Box) it came with a wall charger (The new models do not).
I figure if I have anything for a year, it becomes last year's model then, so what.
I agree with the car scenario also, just from a reputable place.

I do the same thing. I use a company called "Backmarket", that I highly recommend, for all my electronics, (including this phone). Most everything is late models (but used, sometimes showroom displays), most look like new, everything is tested and has a years warranty, and the prices are much lower than any place else I've found. Can't think of a good reason to buy at full prices from a store any more!
Ray.
There we go,
used! I buy most of my photography equipment used. Including 40 year old lenses!

Did you notice if they were shooting the cellphone wide side-to-side or vertically?
If vertically, they should be fired.

I agree with you that there are now too many UHH Sections. As far as Admin moving topics is concerned, I have also been caught up in that. I have had some disagreements with Admin but generally find his/her actions consistent and in line with stated policies. If you review your moved topics against these policies you might find that Admin is not as "wrong" and arbitrary as you think. Finding a topic that has been moved shouldn't be hard. If you had it on your "Watch" list, it'll stay on the list but just show up in the new section. Grin and bear it and enjoy!
It really comes down to what you want. It's like comparing a Brownie camera to a SLR. The brownie has a fixed optical lens. a fixed aperture, and a single shutter speed and takes pictures. But it has its limits.
An Apple Iphone camera is more flexible, but has it's limits as well. I can't mount a telephoto zoom lens or a wide angle lens to it. My polarizer filter is to big to fit it. It takes pictures, but has it's limits.
I on occasionally use a cell phone camera because it's there. It fits in my hip pocket. But for serious work, my SLR is far more flexible and adaptable to what I need. It and its accessories require a back pack.
The phone takes great snapshots. My camera takes great photographs...........
Interesting how so many people expound on why cellphones are good, or why they are bad.
In either case, they are voicing
their opinion on why they feel that way.
Are they trying to sway us? Justify their feelings?
If a camera, whatever brand/model/technology, does what one needs and one is pleased with the results, USE IT.
If it doesn't, DON'T.
Simple.....
Just because certain models are beneath (or above) one, doesn't mean that everyone should feel that way.
