Realistically, it is highly unlikely that you will ever recover the stolen cameras. Generally people don't research the serial number on the internet after they purchase a used camera. And even if they did and discovered that the camera was stolen, they don't want to take the loss.

Through Facebook Marketplace and a pending payment in Pal Pal. Got various fake PayPal emails stating that I had up grade my PayPal account for an additional $850 for a business account to release my pending payment, which I did not pay. PayPal can't help me as this was outside of PayPal and not genuine.

Stories like this reinforces my skepticism about making purchases from private sellers. I've never done it and never will. "Let the buyer beware". I purchase all my equipment from established businesses such as B&H or Adorama. Any higher costs are worth the peace of mind.

I disagree. Ive had successful purchases and sales via paypal. First, you have to have a paypal account. You have to go to the paypal website to ensure that all is right. You cannot do transactions via email. If you are selling an item, you send an invoice. (which does send a link for payment but I always just go to the website. ) The buyer then pays, which shows up on the paypal website. You then ship the item.

Buying, is basically the same thing...they send you an invoice. Dbl check on the website. Pay the invoice via your paypal account, it goes to the seller and they send the item. Any ripoffs using that system are paypal's problem.

This is no different than getting an email or text from some so called bank that says you have to use the link to log in. Never do that. If Citi needs you to take an action, go onto the trusted site and do what ever is needed. Do not trust links, ever. I have recently received multiple text messages from bogus banking sites telling me my credit card was compromised, etc...all bogus.

Finally, I don't have a great deal of faith in a local police agency to do much (this coming from a guy who was a local agency guy for 35 years. ) This fraud was perpetrated via wire, as in a federal crime. See if the FBI is interested....unless the locals have a unit that deals with this thing, even NYPD or LAPD, the chances of a detective working the case are pretty slim.

Might be time time to send Guido to Springfield Gardens for a friendly visit.

Alas, the error was the seller, and nothing to do with PayPal. A spoofed email was sent. Instead of reviewing the confirmation of funds in their actual PayPal account, the seller accepted the spoofed email instead and shipped.

That also happened to me once. Got this "looked a lot like" an official Paypal receipt, when I went to my Paypal account to confirm payment, no payment was ever made. The seller believed the fake paypal receipt and did not verify it by looking at his own paypal acccount.
I use the Ronald Regan approach, "trust but verify".

I was scammed on the internet

Hi, I was scammed exactly the same way. The PayPal link sent to me had a link to the usps. I mailed my $1200 lens and when the money never appeared in my account I called Paypal to learn that it was a bogus account. I filed a police report to no avail because the lens was sent to Texas. My insurance company denied the claim because it does not cover scams. I sadly have walked a long mile in your shoes. I am sorry for your loss.

First, I’m sorry for your loss. I was sucked in on a similar scam about 4 years ago. I was selling my iPhone. Got an email from a guy in NJ who wanted it ASAP. He would pay extra to ship it overnight. I got a “PayPal” email showing the money had been received (first time I received money with PP). I boxed it up took it to FedEx and off it went. No money! It was fake! PP wouldn’t do anything because it actually didn’t go thru them. I paid FedEx with an Amex card. My wife called Amex. Amex/FedEx tracked it to the guy in NJ who forwarded it to Miami and intercepted it before it got on a boat (or plane?) to Nigeria. I had it back in 4-5 days. I had to pay the FedEx charge back to me, but WOW! The fake email was a perfect copy of the real thing.

Same here as well, but there had been enough red flags raised during negotiations that I didn't trust anything about the transaction ( things like shipping to West Africa...yeah it was Nigeria).

As such when I got the official looking PayPal e-mail about a "pending" payment I went directly to PayPal and found no such payment.

I then sent the e-mail to PayPal's investigative unit (spoof@paypal.com) and heard back immediately that it was fake...end of story.

CALL THE COPS!!!

That address in Springfield Gardens, N.Y, caught my eye. I lived in that part of South Queens briefly before entering the service- actually waiting for walking distance of that intersection. That is an industrial area with many warehouses, storage facilities and commercial premises.

Rather than mess around with Pay-Pal or anyone else who will disclaim any responsibility, report the FRAUD to the police. You may want to start with your local police or go (CALL) directly to the New York City Police Department in the district. The 113 Precinct is the station house that covers Springfield Gardens. Here is a link to their website with all their contacts and coordinates.

Get all your paperwork, names, dates, and detail in order so you can explain exactly what happened. The NYPD is very good at recovering stolen merchandise. They distribute a "HOT-SHEET" to all pawn shops and companies that have a second-hade dealer's license. They find stuff that the bad guys are attempting to sell in a camera store, hock-shops, etc.

It's worth a shot!

Attaced is a Google Earth shot of the aforementioned address.

Tom, I’m so sorry this has happened to you on top of the illness forcing you to sell your equipment. Wish I could do something to help.
