Any time I've purchased my second choice because my first choice wasn't available, I've regretted it. Fortunately, that hasn't happened with my camera purchases.

I even sent a letter to Nikon saying that I had been a customer since 1972.....they don't even care!

The fact that you are considering Sony with having Nikon equipment says you are not shy of switching. Obviously waiting for the Nikon's availability is the cheapest way to go. And Nikon is not going to play favorites with you over others as I would expect from them.

But if the frustration becomes too much, and/or the size and weight becomes too much, both the OMDS OM-1 and Panasonic GH6 are available for your consideration. With the new sensors in each, it is not the same 4/3rds as before.

both great cameras. As an older gentleman I sold my heavy Canon equipment for a single lens Sony RX10 IV. Look at the reviews on YouTube. I know the Pro's will poo poo this but no more heavy lenses and a 24-600 2.4-4/8.8 range.

It may be a little off topic but I hope not too far. I have numerous Nikon cameras and lenses but I had a Leica LX5 that I carried with me everywhere and after I fell and broke it I got a Fuji MX3. It is not as small as the Leica but I carry it in my car, I carry when I walk With my friends. It is just a better all around than the Nikon's which are heavier, larger and more intimidating to the people I am around or the ones I want to shoot.

My take on photography equipment. I was a competitive cyclist for 30 years (I stopped at 74 years old due to an inept surgeon) regardless I interacted with many cyclists who were always chasing the latest bicycles ranging in prices from 1500.00 to 10,000 (during the time was active), the upgrades made little difference in their performance other than some modest gain in efficiency i.e. quicker shifting, possibly 6oz to 12oz lighter weight and a new paint job. The real skill in winning a race was Training and Tactics, yes you do need a different bicycle for various types of proficiency i.e. road racing, track racing, mountain biking etc.

For photography I had used an Olympus 4/3rds, a few Canon P&S and my current Canon 30D. I did invest in a Canon 5D II and got rid of it in a month because (for me) it was way out of my level of expertise, by the time I wanted to take the shot it is was gone, the camera was/is obviously one of the best at the time, but I just didn't have the skill to use it.

The point as I see it, some many people here who feel owning the newest and most advance camera will automatically make them take better pictures when they really need more skills and experience. My bicycles were lower middle price of the road, yet I was ranked #1 in the northeast 2 years in a row for single track racing out of 100 people and the oldest in the category.

Just my thoughts.

Really, sharper than the Nikon 70-200 2.8 FL lens?

Really.

It’s been reported that some of the 500 PF lenses have focusing issues and the 70-200 2.8 S is better than the FL version, but that could be because lenses perform better on the mirrorless bodies. The Sony 70-200 II G Master is the new 70-200 champion.

Sony A1 or Nikon Z9

You can buy a Sony A1, or you can order a Nikon Z9 and wait and wait and wait.

My Z9 is a real learning experience at 75. One feature I really like is the ability to transfer and look at my shots on my iPad or iPhone. I only purchased two Z lenses: 24-200 and the 100-400S. Thinking about the 14-30 as a last Z lens. Be sure to get the FTZII which allows you to use your existing glass. I also picked up the available Z tele extenders. It was worth the wait. If you still need a Z9, try Hunt's in Manchester, NH. or Colonial in Orlando, FL.

Some of us don’t limit ourselves to just needs, we might get something we don’t need because we WANT it.

Obviously, you do not use the gun (or camera) guys dictionary. The word need is not there and the word want is in bold-face letters and is a synonym to credit card. Imagine that. Keep shooting.
