It is an actual town founded during the gold rush days, and survived for a short while after most all gold was found and mined. Few stayed there after that but eventually all left, and this is now what remains of it. There are multiple buildings, homes, town hall, church, saloons, etc, and most all can be walked through.

thanks, we only had a few hours there also, and probably only got to walk through (and photograph) maybe 50% of the buildings...would have loved more time there but was a few hours away from where we were visiting, and dinner conflicts made it impossible..great place though!

yes, would be worth a visit, and easily tied into a visit to Yellowstone. And yes, it was the capital back then, the first one, and changed twice since then. Thanks!
