An underwater volcanic eruption has raised the possibility of a tsunami.

“If you are located in this coastal area, move off the beach and out of harbors and marinas,” the agency urged people along the West Coast. (National Weather Service)

No Tsunami here so far. People who don't live on the West Coast may have never seen one of these. I pass by many of them when I drive up the California coast north of San Francisco.

Interesting way of putting it since I spent a while watching videos of surfers getting stoked about the chance to surf a tsunami.
I can imagine the disappointment to learn it was just a one foot wave.

One foot that you can see. The energy is under the surface. Ships don't need to worry about Tsunamis because of this. They might feel a bump when one passes. I remember watching that Tsunami in Japan where the water just kept rising and surging inland. I once read that they're found evidence of past Tsunamis in the coastal hills of California as high as 300 feet above sea level. I'm just going to guess that this is from finding stuff that's supposed to be in the ocean in a layer that high.

Amazing. I saw a graph of the sound wave recorded in California from the eruption, but I can't find it at the moment. Krakatoa was heard around the entire world.

It was no big deal. Happens about once a decade. 1-3 feet waves.

Someone living in San Francisco in 1905 could have said the same thing about earthquakes. No big deal. We don't live long enough in one lifetime to see the overall history of Tsunamis and earthquakes, but the fact of the matter is that catastrophic events like these have happened in the past and will happen again. We don't have any control over these things, and the best we can do is to improve our ability to see them coming.

No big deal??? In 2004, 227,898 people died when a tsunami struck areas surrounding The Indian Ocean. Those "1-3 foot waves" contain a lot of water.
